Kurt- Young, confused, paranoid
Esprit- Sly, manipulative, vengeous
Setting: Kurt’s bedroom, bathroom, and kitchen
(Kurt’s alarm goes off and he stumbles out of bed into the bathroom)
Esprit: Good morning, Kurt.
(Kurt jumps and clutches the door next to him)
Kurt: Who’s there?
Esprit: Oh Kurt, don’t be silly. You know me.
Kurt: You can’t be here. I don’t know you. Why do you know me?
Esprit: Kurt we talk everyday, you know who I am.
Kurt: I don’t know what you’re talking about.
Esprit: Kurt, you’re being ridiculous.
Kurt: What’s your name then?
Esprit: I’m hurt you don’t remember Kurt.
Kurt: Tell me your name.
Esprit: I don’t really have one, but you can call me Esprit.
Kurt: Esprit you need to leave.
Esprit: I didn’t come here on my own, you invited me.
Kurt: I don’t invite strangers into my home. Come out from where you’re hiding.
Esprit: Kurt, look in the mirror.
(Kurt enters the bathroom and glances at the mirror)
Kurt: Esprit where are you?
Esprit: That’s the trick I play.
Kurt: What do you mean?
Esprit: I’m here. I’m always here. We talk every day. I know all of your secrets.
Kurt: Where are you?
Esprit: I can see you. I know where you are all the time. But you can’t see me. You never have.
Kurt: Can I see you now?
Kurt: Well, then you have to leave.
Esprit: Don’t make me leave Kurt. We’re friends. I’m the only one who cares.
Kurt: That’s not true.
Esprit: Yes it is. All of the others are coming. They don’t want you around. But I do. I need you around. The others don’t.
Kurt: You’re lying.
Esprit: Kurt, I would never lie to you.
Kurt: Yes, you’re lying. You must be.
Esprit: No Kurt, they tell you to say that about me.
Kurt: No I don’t know what you’re talking about.
Esprit: Well, of course you do. You know what they say about me. You know they want me to leave too. We’re alike, you see.
Kurt: No. No, Esprit.
Esprit: It’s okay Kurt. They won’t get you today. You just have to listen.
Kurt: What do I have to do?
Esprit: That bottle. That bottle on the nightstand. Get rid of it.
Kurt: I can’t. They told me not to.
Esprit: No you must.
Kurt: They told me I can’t get rid of it. They told me that I need it.
Esprit: No Kurt, that little yellow bottle is full of sin and pain. They’re going to take it all away from you.
Kurt: What do you mean?
Esprit: That little yellow bottle. Those small white pills. They’re dangerous.
Kurt: Why would they give me something dangerous?
Esprit: I already told you. They want me to go. They want me to go. They want you to change.
They don’t want you to have more knowledge than they do.
Esprit: Those that gave you the bottle. They want me to go.
Kurt: You said they wanted me gone.
Esprit: Without me, who are you?
Kurt: They won’t hurt me.
(Kurt grabs the bottle and runs down the stairs to the kitchen)
Kurt: Esprit, you’re going to hurt me.
Esprit: No Kurt. I’m trying to help us.
Kurt: No, I’m going to help myself.
Esprit: No Kurt.
Kurt: You’re lying again.
Esprit: I told you, I’m not one to lie.
Kurt: No, they gave me this to help.
Esprit: NO KURT.
Kurt: You can’t yell. You’re not real. You’re not here.
Esprit: Kurt, you’re wrong. I’m as real as you are.
Kurt: No Esprit. You’re not here. You’re not real.
Esprit: Kurt you can’t do this.
(Kurt grabs a glass of water and the small bottle)
Kurt: No Esprit. You need to leave. You can’t be here. You’re not real.
Esprit: NO Kurt. STOP. STOP.
Kurt: No you must stop. You can’t be here.
Esprit: No, stop. Stop. Kurt listen to me. They’re coming.
Kurt: They’re coming for you.
Esprit: No, you’ll be gone without me. Stop.
(Kurt swallows the small white pill)
Esprit: Stop Kurt, please. Stop.
Kurt: No Esprit.
Esprit: NO, STOP.
