"chemistry between people is the strangest science of all" - Bridgett Devoue

if these shades slip over my eyes,

is it a promise that all the

terror and pain in the world

will be temporarily

wiped out?

will the rouge frames blend in

with the blood on the battlefield,

concealing horror around every corner?

does it signify a

oversized sunglasses correlate

with an uninspired psyche,

a bored and brawl-seeking wolf

is that the impression of

my pink-tinted sunglasses?

if i put them on intentionally,

do they imply an unintentional ignorance

I need a relief

from this torture

I hope you understand

that I’m putting on these

sunglasses for me and I’m sorry

that it might hurt you but it’s not personal

it’s just that I need some time to heal

under these rose-colored lenses

and as they slip over the bridge of

my bruised nose the

spots clear and the pain subsides

the sky is clearer than I remember

believe me, I know

that this is fragmented reality

but don’t we all need a break from

it all sometimes?

I can ignore the blue spots that

trace my spine like an ellipsis that

never seems to end

the chemicals that shoot through my veins

three times a week don’t matter

under this mauve windshield

that protects me in case of a crash

and the crash is coming

we know it’s inevitable

so let me try and protect myself

for right now

because too soon

nothing will be able to protect me

it’s not ignorance.

it has another name.

if you were dying too,

I’d ask you to join me in this

floral-colored sea of tranquility.

I reread My Sisters Keeper the other day and Kate inspired this poem to an extent – she was considerably less ignorant than the narrator of this poem, but to me, they have a similar mentality.
