“Be Yourself”

They say
“Be yourself”
As though it is
Some great milestone
Only halfway to
Greatness, but
Nobody really knows
What they are, and
(I’m not talking about atoms) so
They smile and
Carbon copy their neighbor, and
Anyways, it’s better to be somebody than
They pay their ten cents, and
For what it’s worth
They’re getting
(more than they deserve)
A LIFE to live, so
Maybe they have a sliver of a hope
I guess they didn’t know that
When you take the cheap way out,
You end up collapsing, and
Marble is tougher than cotton
Anyways, so
Build yourself strong
(not at the gym)
And maybe when the
Copy machine breaks, you’ll
Have your ten cents to
Buy some food and
Sustenance is what keeps you alive

I liked that poem a lot. You took the phrase "be yourself" to a whole new level, and turning it into a metaphor that makes sense and, well, I basically loved it. A lot!
