“April is over, April is over. There are all kinds of love in the world, but never the same love twice.”

-F. Scott Fitzgerald

If You placed your hand in front of the light,
once the sun dies and all your nosy neighbors have fallen into sleep,
You will find the shadow of your fingers
printed on the wall,
silhouettes of fingers and palms,
I will show You how to twist your hands into shapes
So that we may watch a dog evolve into an eagle
and an elk become a rabbit
as if it were no more than the sky transitioning from blue to pink;
and as You watch the shadows
I will be watching the light
as it plays across your hand
begging, aching, waiting
to reach out and hold You,
my fingers mimic my thoughts,
twisting in my lap
as if they are hounds ready for the hunt;
but my lips remain shut
and I stay silent as the animals dance across the walls;
You will turn to me
your hair falling over your forehead,
playing against the tips of your eyelashes
and your eyes will ask every question
I have wanted to hear
and my mouth will have every answer,
in every language,
and in three syllables
I will confirm your hopes
and seal my heart,
stamping it with your insignia,
and place it in your mouth
until your tongue rots from your skull and the ligaments in my bones are no more than dust.
