"One day, your life will flash before your eyes; make sure it's worth watching."

He was old, but not too old:
he had silver in his hair, a golden heart
I can see him sitting on that hospital bed,
surrounded by white walls and blue curtains,
the beeping of machines ringing every so often,
Thin, wrinkled hands and long fingers, much like a pianist's,
one holding on to the bed,
the other spreading jam on stale toast,
carefully, slowly, hands numb and shaking,
the pillows surrounding him,
clouds in heaven,
did not give him much support
He waited,
taking bites of tasteless food,
awaiting some flavor to reach him.
The nurse walked in, drawing the curtains
"How much longer?"
"Not long,"
He looked back down
and continued to spread jam on toast
