We accept the love we think we deserve.

I sat by my window, watching the cool drops of rain run down the glass like they were having little races. The border collie that my family and I loved so much had still not returned from his last week’s rabbit chase. Duke would chase various kinds of animals through the forest behind my house. The longest he’s ever been gone was one overnight stay in the forest, laying in a puddle of mud that he enjoyed more than he should have. I wished that he would just come home and lay next to me as he always does, whimpering at the thunder. I looked out the cool, clouded glass window and saw a figure in the bushes. I smiled to myself as Duke came running through my yard, a dead rabbit hanging limp from his mouth. My mom wasn’t too excited about the mess and the smell, but I was just happy to have him home.
