Cold War Society
As a rose from the depths of the water I made out of faint figure upon a sailboat. This mysterious man pulled me out of the water just as I fell into a eight day sleep.
After awakening to a cold cloth on my head I radically attempted to free myself. To my exhaust the door was locked from the outside. I saw a man and a woman drinking tea and chatting and I looked down to see water rushing at my feet. The room slowly began to fill up with water. I banged on the door as hard as I could when the man turned and noticed me banging. He rushed over and opened the door as quickly as he could. As I watched the water rush out I thanked him gratefully.
“What for” he replied.
“You saved my life” the room was filling with water, it was up to my neck!!!
Curiously he walked into the room, only to notice that the floors were dry, the bed straight and nothing seemed to be out of place. Puzzled, he said I must've been dreaming, although I assured him that I had awoken. As he brought me a blanket and took me out onto the deck of his sailboat, I quickly wrapped the blanket around myself. The air was shivering cold and freezing to the touch. I looked all around only to see miles and miles and miles of deathly freezing water. I am thinking that we are in the Atlantic. The couple who I have learned to call Mr. and Mrs. Anderson were about 50 or 60. He had short white hair with spots of grey, here and there and she, black hair with so many white strands it appeared as if it was salt and pepper. They were both of medium height although he seemed to be a few inches taller than she was. He was strong for his size and wore glasses, but didn't seem like he was very bright as if he only wore them to feel smarter than others. She however was very smart and very caring. she had a motherly aspect to everything she did and every word that came out of her mouth had a purpose, and she had a very kind and motherly tone for everything.
I perceived to ask them questions about how and why I was on their boat. But, of course they could not answer all of these even though they tried their best. I swear we sat out on the deck for hours talking about my life. At one point my questions were both abrupt and constant because I was so confused, that Mr. and Mrs. Anderson had no time to respond. They asked my name which I told him was Anthony but then I also told me told them they could call me Tony, At least that's what my friends called me. I learned more than I expect but they weren't very helpful. They had said that they came out here some 80 miles off the coast of of what used to be Washington. now it's just a pile of ash. They wanted to get away from the society that was created from the chaos of the war. It have been too much for them to bare. 13 years since the war, which started in 1954, had ended. I was only two when it started but my instructors had explained very much to us. The world have been full of hatred for too long, and one day everyone snapped. The worlds lead scientists had created something they called the Atom Bomb. When the Soviets, at least that's what they said they were called, struck first, taking out Washington, our whole government fell apart. The man in charge of our ‘country’ now was only alive because he was in jail for misconduct and brutality. He was the secretary of the military and was a very brutal man. His face is imprinted into everybody's mind. His eyes are very stern and scary. They can make any man, woman, or child afraid.
He took control of this ‘country’ when the Soviets attacked and countered with a full nuclear attack. He attacked every major city in the world. Moscow, Beijing, Madrid, London, West Berlin and East Berlin... All destroyed. A nuclear war had begun. After the first attack I was with my parents, again being only two years old I did not know what was going on. We lived in Chicago, right in the middle of the city.
After the chaos my parents took me out to a shack right outside of the walls of Chicago. We stayed in the shack for three months until another attack occurred, when they attacked Chicago. The radiation from the nuclear attack spread 30 or 40 miles out of the city but it wasn't enough to reach us. We watched as the giant mushroom swallowed are home, the city which we had lived, in the city which I was conceived and born. Luckily the radiation wasn't very bad. My acute organs would or should have shut down but some miracle occurred, which I don't understand. I along with my parents survived, or so we thought.
As we made our way to a refugee camp set up near Kankakee, a small town which I had never visited before. We stayed there for 3 1/2 years until they came. Led by the man who destroyed the world. The man whose face I will never forget came with an army of expressionless and compassionateless men. They seemed to have been brainwashed because they rounded up all the children, teachers, and doctors and then they killed everyone else. My parents were killed... everyone was killed. He took the few of us left and shuffled us all onto a transporter which seem to be a giant movable prison. They locked us up and almost starved us for about 38 months. I endeared this tragic life, every day. This monstrous machine would drive for at least 11 hours, stop and refill at these camps and continue for another 11 hours. This happened like clockwork. They explained to us the rules of this prison. If we misbehaved, questioned their authority, or asked, in their opinion, stupid questions you were beaten severely.
I remember on my birthday when I was turning 10 my life changed forever. a girl about my age and ask for some more water the man without hesitation slapped her across the face and walked off and she laid there crying I rushed over to her and tried to comfort her I asked her name and is she seem so choked up, but she was able to say as quietly and as scared as she was, Alexandria. Later we became great friends and I had learned to call her Alex. For the next few months we had been put into a school now I understood why they kept the teachers, they taught us all the history of what had happened before and what was happening now. The oldest kids were only 15 years old, because after that, they left. We never did know what happened to them.
Alex and I were in the same class. I had made other friends but none of them were as good of friends as Alex and I were. Me and Alex were best friends, we were always together and always helped each other. One day, one of the older kids who was only three years older then I was told us of the plan to revolt. Their plan come together and take down the guards and run away. Very simpleminded but they were strong headed and willing to do anything to escape. One day our teachers told us what we're doing on this prison. We were on our way to Washington which was being rebuilt from the attack. We first had to go to every major or small city across what is left of united states and get all of the children teachers and doctors. I would later learn of the generals plans.
He wanted to start a new empire, by eliminating everyone who stood in his way. The only way to stop him was to join the rebellion. Everyday we trained and everyday we got stronger and bigger. Finally we were ready to attack. We had noticed that at 12:37 am every day, there was a 15 second delay in the locks in which we were held. Something scattered the electronic locks and we could escape our cells with ease. We decided that while our enemy slept, we would attack.
It was the day of the attack. We were all ready. The doors unlocked like clockwork and it started. We fought as hard as we could, and with all of our will, but we lost. With the few of us left they took us out on to the Atlantic Ocean and pushed us overboard. I guess I was lucky to find you, because no one else survived.
