ACT V
Scene i

Mantua, a street.
ROMEO, ISABELLA, CARYN on stage
ISABELLA: spoken not a word have thee since arrival
CARYN: My lips are too frozen to speak.
ISABELLA: Why dost thou grieve for Benvolio,
‘tis not lost?
CARYN: I am forlorn with departed love.
What he would have felt in my absence?
ROMEO: Thou knowest nothing of love.
CARYN: Silence, Romeo. You haven’t a heart.
ROMEO: Know me, you do not!
If I may trust the falttering truth of sleep,
My dreams presage some joyful news at hand.
My bosom’s lord sits lightly in his throne,
And all this day an unaccustomed spirit
Lifts me above the ground with cheerful thoughts.
I dreamt my lady came and found me dead-
Strange dream, that gives a dead man leave to think!-
And breathed such life with kisses in my lips
That I revived was an emperor.
Ah me, how sweet is loves itself possessed
When but love’s shadows are so rich in joy!
Enter BALTHASAR hurredly.
He speaks quietly with ROMEO.
ROMEO exits running.
BALTHASAR hangs back guiltily.
Silence
CARYN: Balthasar, what brings thee?
BALTHASAR: I cannot say.
ISABELLA: Why not?
BALTHASAR: ‘Twould betray the trust of my master.
Re-enter ROMEO speaking quietly with APOTHECARY.
APOTHECARY hands him a vile.
Exit ROMEO running.
CARYN: To whence does Romeo run so quick?
ISABELLA: Balthasar, I believe you discern.
BALTHASAR: ‘tis not for me to say.
ISABELLA: (threateningly) So it is?
BALTHASAR: He rides home to Verona!
CARYN: But why? He will be killed!
Does he not heed the prince’s sentence?
ISABELLA: Dear man, pray tell,
Why dost our man ride to his death?
BELATHASAR: Lady Juliet lies dead!
ISABELLA: Lady Juliet, She be his enemy?
CARYN: (realizing) Nay! She be his love!
ISABELLA: Then he is a martyr!
CARYN: Balthasar, we must stop Romeo’s foolish madness.
We must return to Verona,
But we do not know the way.
BALTHASAR: Come, we must hurry!
Exit quickly

Scene ii
Verona cemetery
Enter, FRIAR LAWRENCE, NURSE, BENVOLIO, SAMSON, GREGORY, HEADS OF HOUSES, LADY CPULET, PRINCE, ABRAHAM, PETRARCH, and some CITIZENS carrying the bodies of ROMEO and JULIET.
ALL are silent.
They lay the bodies down and place flowers on them and bow their heads.
PRINCE: Capulet, Monatgaue,
See what scourge is laid upon your hate,
That heaven finds means to kill your joys with love.
And I, for winking at your discords, too
Have lost a brace of kinsmen. All are punished!
CAPULET: O brother Monatgue, give me thy hand.
This is my daughter’s jointure, for no more
Can I demand.
MONTAGUE: But I can give thee more,
For I will raise her statue in pure gold,
That whiles Verona by that name is known
There shall no figure at such rate be set
As that of true and faithful Juliet.
CAPULET: As rich shall Romeo’s by his lady’s lie;
Poor sacrifices of our enmity!
PRINCE: A glooming peace this morning with it brings;
The sun, for sorrow, will not show his head.
Go hence to have more talk of these sad things.
Some shall be pardoned, and some shall be punished;
For never was a story of more woe
Than this of Juliet and her Romeo.
Exit MONTAGUE, and CAPULET hand in hand.
Followed by the rest hand in hand with member of opposite house.

Scene iii

Verons gates with golden statues on stage
BENVOLIO walks solemnly down the street.
BENVOLIO: O simple sorrow of grief and loss
Of lonely lips and empty arms.
Parted lovers, parted friends
But the cost of dear amends.
(pause)
O Romeo, I hope you are content above
With Lady Juliet, thy star-crossed love.
(pause)
Caryn, my true heart
Where are thee,
Sent word to Mantua
Yet I receive no heed!
Didst thou dream of me?
Or have I been forgotten
Doomed to once again roam
With half a heart.
Left heir, am I, to Montague’s store.
A fortune incomparable to the value of thee.
Please my love, my lady, return to me.
Enter BALTHASAR
BALTHASAR: BENVOLIO!
BENVOLIO: Balthasar, my good fellow.
Seen you not have I in nearly a fortnight.
Tell me how do you fare?
BALTHASAR: I am well; however, I have returned.
BENVOLIO: Ah, yes, departed had you not a day after the funeral.
Was the road kind to you?
BALTHASAR: Yes, Yes! But there was a plague!
A plague! Not half way ‘tween there and here.
BENVOLIO: Terrible. Are you well?
BALTHASAR: Silence and fasten your lips!
I return well, but I do not return alone!
A ghastly misfortuned plague
Kept thy lady stay
Now she returns this day!
Enter CARYN behind BENVOLIO’s back.
BALTHASAR: Turn round my lord,
Thy lady awaits.
BENVOLIO: (turns slowly)
CARYN: Hello, Benvolio.
BENVOLIO: (runs to her, they embrace)
(They kiss) ALL come out on stage cheering even those dead then they take their bows.
