The Savior of the World, Jesus Christ, was born in a dirty, smelly, old stable because there was no room for Mary and Joseph in the inn. Jesus was born into a poor family. He was not royalty, he was an ordinary, poor baby. In today’s world, an estimated three hundred and eighty-five million children are born into poverty. Mothers in third world countries are having their children at home, without proper medical equipment and sanitation. Their newborns are being exposed to all kinds of germs the second they leave their mother’s womb. Without medical professionals, women are risking both their own lives and the lives of their children. So many things can go wrong during childbirth, so it is important that all women have access to sanitary healthcare facilities to give birth. Just like women living in poverty in today’s world, Mary had to give birth in an unsanitary environment without any healthcare professionals present. The Catholic Social Teaching of preferential options for the poor, calls us to help the poor have access to things like healthy environments to give birth to their children. All children deserve to enter this world in a safe way that does not endanger their well-being. All newborns should have access to proper healthcare after they are born and the mothers should be provided with food and medicine, so that they may gain the strength to take care of and feed their child. Overall, the birth of Jesus reminds us of those who are suffering around the world due to the lack of safe places to give birth.
