Molly received a car for her 16th birthday. A small, slightly used, but dependable Mercury Milan. Through years of Friday nights, coffee runs, dates and road trips, that Mercury Milan was there.

After breaking it off with her boyfriend, Molly broke down. On the ride home, that Mercury Milan played music that calmed her and made her feel strong again. During summer nights of pool parties, food runs and bonfires, her car was the fun transport that always kept the party going. When Molly hit a deer, her car protected her from harm, through airbags. Molly’s car took car of her first, regardless of its resulting injuries.

That Mercury Milan was there for her prom night, her gossip sessions, through breakups to acceptance letters. And now it’s time for Molly to go to college, and she doesn’t need to rely on her Mercury Milan anymore. However, her little sister Erika is almost 16, and she will need a vehicle that’s reliable, and always plays the right song.

This piece was written as a personal metaphor. I compared myself to a car, because I am dependable, hardworking and trustworthy. I wrote the car to grow up with the character Molly, because it showed that the car was always something she could depend on.
