To Hide
She held her knees, rocking back and forth.
“Not again, not again,” she whispered to herself.
“He’s not back, he can’t be,”. But she knew he was.
She fumbled around in the boxes beside her, until she found what she was looking for.
The light orange bottle of pills felt heavy in her hand.
How ironic, she thought to herself.
The pills meant to keep her from doing this were going to help her do it.
She couldn’t go out and face him.
She knew that this time, he wasn’t going to let her leave.
She couldn’t stay.
She couldn’t just sit and wait for him to inevitably find her. Not again.
She unscrewed the cap and tipped the contents into her mouth just as the door was yanked open.
A sense of euphoria overtook her.
She looked up at him and laughed, dropping the bottle as she began to black out.
She won.
He couldn’t hurt her anymore.
I wanted this piece to be simple. The reader doesn’t know the full story, but everyone will have an idea of what happened. Read between the lines. There’s a big clue to what happened, if you’re smart enough to find it.
