Moving Up
Buzzzz, Buzzzz. Lily’s alarm clock rang. It was Monday, the first day back after Thanksgiving weekend. She and her family had an eventful Thanksgiving. The drive all the way up to Vermont to see their Grandma and a little bit of skiing was included. It was a regular school day at West Brook middle school.
“Are we going in soon?” said Izzy.
It was at least 30℉ outside and the teachers were not letting the students in yet. Everyone on the blacktop looked tired and not ready for school.
“Mondays aren’t that bad for me,” said Lily. She has science, gym, Italian and then math with all of her closest friends. Every week started good, and she wasn’t mad about it.
“I’m so glad that we all have math together. It makes it 100x better when I have any of you to talk too.” Said Jane, Lily’s other friend.
All the girls agree and they are finally let in by the teachers. Lily’s day started good and she had no complaints. Her very first class was a study hall so that made it even better.
“We only have the essay and study guide due this week right? That's easy enough,” said Lily.
Lily, Jane, Izzy and their other friend Sophia walked around the track the whole recess. At lunch, they just discussed how they were happy that they had a lot of classes together this year and how they work well together. Then everything went south. After the girls gather their books and head to math, their teacher Mrs. Green gets on the phone. Mrs. Green is surprised about the information that she is hearing over the phone. Then she hangs up and starts the lesson.
“Oh, Lily, can I speak to you after class? It’s not bad I promise!” Mrs. Green blurts out. The look on Lily’s face is definitely confusing. Some of the thoughts that are going through her head are: a very good grade, something for another class, or it could be something that Mrs. Green thinks is good, but it's bad for Lily.
“Um, sure. Okay.” Lily replies. At this point, everyone in her class is looking at her. Her faces get rosy pink and she just wants the class to be over
Soon, her wish comes true. They all hear the bell ring and they start to leave for their next class. But of course Lily has to stay.
“ Lily, so, I just got a call from the superintendent saying that your grades have been so good that you'll be moved up to advanced math on Wednesday. I know that you are not used to the teacher or any of the kids in the class but I feel that you will fit in very well.” Mrs. Green explains.
“Wow, I was not expecting this. Will any other classes change because of this? Will I still be in a lot of classes with my friends? Lily replies. She can hear the second bell ring but very faintly.
“ Yes, sweetie. Tomorrow morning you will come early and meet with the superintendent. Now go on to your next class.” Mrs. Green says back.
As Lily walks down the hallway, she is confused and has so many other emotions coming at her. A new math class?! With other kids?! She is definitely dreading the rest of the week now.
Like Mrs. Green said she went to the office in the morning and talk to the superintendent. It turns out that she is going to have to change three of her classes around. But now she'll be in English with her three best friends but not math, which was the best class.
As she goes to the blacktop before school, she's bombarded with questions from her friends.
“What happened yesterday? Are you in trouble? Did something happen?” says Sophia when she gets there.
“Well, it's good but, I'm really sad about it. I'm moving up to the advanced math class and all my classes are going to get switched around and I won't be in the math class with you guys anymore!” She says. With a frown on everyone's face, they get called to go in.
“With you being in this new math class it'll only be me, Jane and Sophia and it's going to be the worst class of the day!” says Izzy as they walk to social studies. As the day goes by she just goes about how hard it's going to be in or near math class tomorrow. Then tomorrow comes.
“Mom, do I really have to switch classes? I don't know anyone in the math class that I’m going into, and I don't like the teacher at all! Izzy, Jane, and Sophia are all in the math class that I was in and it was the best one! Usually, kids don't like math so is this really necessary?” Lily asks her mom.
“Yes, honey. This is necessary. Your grades have been so good this year, that they had to move you there. I promise you this will be a good thing.” Her mom says.
Without responding, Lily starts walking out the door and walks to school. Math is right after lunch, so she's not looking forward to that.
“RIIIIIIINNNNNGGG” goes the bell right after lunch. This was the time that Lily was dreading for the past two days.
“Today, we welcome Lily to our math class,” says Miss Dash. “Let's give her a round of applause!” The entire class of 22 kids starts clapping for her. She realizes that this might not be the worst thing in the world. Her seat is right next to Tara Jenkins, who she has Italian with.
“ Hi! This class is not as bad as they say and Miss dash is actually pretty nice!” Tara says to her. This made Lily smile and laugh. She was not having the worst time.
“So, today we will be learning about proportions. Can anyone solve this?” Miss Dash asks. Lily realizes that she does the know the answer. Similar to a few people, she starts raising her hand slowly. She was really hoping that no one would notice.
“Lily! Let's see if you can solve it.” Miss Dash says. Lily is now bright red but finally, builds up the courage. She says the answer and waits patiently.
“Hmmm. That is correct! Great job Lily.” She exclaims. Lily looks up with what is the biggest smile ever. This class won’t be so bad.
