last words

Blood. The place reeks of it. Wounded soldiers lay with the dead. Their hope of ever seeing their families again is fading. They thought this would help. They thought they could help end the war so that their descendants could have peace, but was it worth it? They risk their lives so that their fearless leaders could just send in more soldiers into different battles. Men who were once enemies take their last breathes together.

In the middle of the field, a dying man lays on the ground. He stares at a flower in front of him. It was a beautiful white lily; it was so out of place. How, how could this fragile flower last when he could not? How does it stand untouched by the rages of war? Why must he die, he has a fiance. He said that he would come back. He told her not to worry. He did not want his words to be a lie, but no one would come. The men who were alive and well left hours ago. All he could do now is write her a final letter. He took out a piece of paper that he had originally planned to write a letter of reassurance to his fiance. Now he uses it to write his last words to her.

Dear Sara,

I’m sorry. I won’t be coming back as I promised, but I want you to know that I love you. Please don’t shed tears for me. I hate when you cry. I want you to be happy and live for both of us.

Love,   David

He smiled. It was a simple letter, but it was all he could do. He did not have the strength to write anymore. He took the dog tags off from his neck and wrapped them around his wrist of the hand that he held the letter. He picked the lily and put it in the hand of the letter.  This was it. All he could do now is hope that his letter would reach her. He had hope that he might see her again, in the afterlife.
