What More?
[Melissa sat on the doorstep; she held her face in her hands. She was thinking things through, deciding what move she should take. A few minutes later John walks up the path toward Melissa's house. Melissa looks up and stands, not sure to start out this conflict that they were about to have. As she stands John comes to give her a hug but she shrugs it off and stands rigid. The look of pain is written across her face.]
John:
Is something wrong?
Melissa:
I've been waiting for you.
John:
I've been busy taking care of something's.
Melissa:
So everything else is more important. What I have to say doesn't matter.
John:
No, it's not that. Of course what you have to say matters. Now what did you have to tell me?
[As he says this he tries to hug Melissa again. But Melissa walks away she wont let John touch her]
Melissa:
How was the party on Friday?
John:
[realization hit him hard and it began to dawn on him what was wrong.] Oh'.. It was fun, but I wish you had been there.
Melissa:
What did you do at the party?
John:
I just danced and chilled out. Why?
Melissa:
Is that all you did?
John:
Yes. Why?
Melissa:
Don't lie to me John. You know that's not all you did.
John:
Then what did I do Melissa? [John moves his hand to the bridge of his nose and squeezes it while his forehead creases with concentration. He didn't really remember everything that had happened but he had a faint idea of what she was talking about.]
Melissa:
John, I don't know how to say this, but I think we need to take a break.
John:
What? Why? What's this all about?
Melissa:
John, I asked you to come here to explain yourself, but I guess you can't even be truthful.
John:
Melly, I don't know what you're talking about.
[John tries to take a step forward to her but she backs away. He wants to comfort her to take the look of pain off her face.]
Melissa:
You kissed Jane. Does that ring a bell? And don't act stupid, you know what I'm talking about.
John:
I didn't kiss her.
Melissa:
Don't lie to me John. I saw you.
John:
Where were you? I never saw you at the party.
Melissa:
After we fought, I thought about going to apologize for snapping at you. So I went to the party looking for you. Johnny told me you were upstairs. Then as I'm walking toward you I see Jane and you. At first I thought nothing of it until you kissed her. John you kissed her. So don't even try to lie to me. [She stared deeply into his eyes trying to see if maybe her eyes had seen wrong. But John looked away ashamed. From that moment she knew it was true.]
John:
I'm sorry.
Melissa:
Sorry can't fix anything. You don't know how bad I want to hurt you. Just for you to feel the hurt that I am feeling.
John:
It meant nothing she meant nothing. I was upset about our fight and she tried to comfort me.
Melissa:
And kissing her is a comfort? Then maybe I should go kiss a guy each time I'm mad at you. Maybe then you'll understand how I feel. We weren't over. We never decided to end it like this.
John:
But I thought it was over.
Melissa:
If you thought it was over; then why did you come here? Why did you try and kiss me? You knew what you were doing.
John:
Melly, no I didn't mean it. She means nothing. You mean everything to me.
Melissa:
I don't believe that anymore.
John:
You're going to let one mistake ruin us forever.
Melissa:
I'm not the one letting this ruin everything. You're the one who did this. You're the one who kissed her.
John:
I love you. Please I'm sorry. We can work this out.
Melissa:
Before those words would have meant something. Now they are nothing to me. John, you have to realize that you hurt me. I trusted you. I can't trust you anymore.
John:
I'm still the same. I haven't changed.
Melissa:
The moment you kissed her was the moment you changed. I don't even know you anymore.
John:
No. no, I didn't change; you're the one that's changed. You're the one who didn't have time for me anymore. [He said accusing her but the moment he said it he regretted it.
[Melissa turned and glared at him.]
Melissa:
My mom was dying. I had no time to do anything. At least I didn't go behind your back and kiss anyone.
John:
I'm sorry. I'm sorry. I'm sorry how many times I have to say it.
Melissa:
Till you can look me in the eyes and mean it. I'.. [She paused and choked out a sob] Please just go.
John:
No I won't go. Please don't cry. [He runs and wraps his arms around her.]
Melissa:
No don't touch me. Don't ever touch me again. I don't know you anymore. You're not my same John anymore.
John:
Melissa, please look at me. [Melissa looked away not letting herself look at him.] Look at me. No, look at me. Do you want to fight for us? Or do you want to let us go. I'm willing to fight.
Melissa:
I'm not willing to fight for someone I don't even know anymore. You're a stranger. You don't and will never know how much you hurt me.
John:
I know.
Melissa:
No you don't. I thought that you were the only true guy out there. I thought you were the one guy I knew who would never hurt me. And now that you have, I don't know you, I don't know if I'll ever be able to trust you again.
John:
No, Melly I'm still that guy I'll never hurt you again.
[Melissa kept shaking her head no. She knew if she didn't leave at that moment she would let him have his way. She slowly backed up and ran inside. She fell to the floor and began to sob while John was outside. He began banging on the door begging her to open the door.]
John:
Melly, don't do this. You don't know what you're talking about. You don't want this. [John had been doing this for an hour or so. People around the neighborhood stood to stare and watch. Melissa was in her room crying. Mr. Sims, Melissa's father arrived seeing John banging on the door. Melissa's father used to respect John. He took John as his own son even after John's father had died and his mother worked day and night trying to get John to college. Mr. Sims knew that John had hurt his daughter and just seeing John on his porch made him angry all over. How dare this boy whom he had loved hurt his flesh and blood? He didn't deserve to live.]
Mr. Sims:
John, I think you should leave. Get off my porch before I get my shotgun and shoot you off it.
John:
I won't leave until Melissa comes out here and talks to me. I'.
Mr. Sims:
You better leave or I'll call the sheriff on you. Let's see if a day or two in jail will do you some good.
John:
I love your daughter sir.
Mr. Sims:
No, John because if you did you would have never hurt her. Now leave! [He roared. But John made no move to leave so Mr. Sims walked inside and came out with his shotgun. He cocked it back and prepared to shoot.]
John:
You might as well. I have nothing left to live for.
[Mr. Sims prepared to shoot, but Melissa ran out and stood in front of the gun]
Mr. Sims:
Melissa move I'm about to shoot this jerk off my porch.
Melissa:
No, I won't let you. Even though he hurt me. I want him to live. I want him to know how it feels to feel like I do right now.
John:
Melissa'. Mr. Sims pull the trigger. I don't deserve to live for all the pain I have caused.
Mr. Sims:
No, John, Melissa is right. I'm going let you live but if I catch you on my porch you better know the sheriff will be here soon.
[John left. Melissa pulled her father inside and she looked back and stared into the eyes of the one person she ever loved.]
[Melissa and John grew up together; John lived in Lake Town, Minnesota for 5 years of his life before Melissa moved there. Melissa was 3 years old when she met John. They lived next door to each other. They did everything together. Their parents were best friends and they spent everyday together. Lake Town had a lake that they lived next to and went to on sunny days. But it was a cold day this day and Melissa really wanted to go to the lake and play. At this point John was 7 and Melissa was 5.]
John:
Melly, come back it's too cold to play out in the sand.
Melissa:
But John you said we could play today. I want to go swim with the fishes.
John:
How bout I give you a piggy back ride around the beach and buy you an ice cream. Dad can I have two dollars for me and Melly.
Mr. Blake:
Here you go kids just make sure you come back before dark.
John:
Ok. Let's go Melly'..
Melissa:
Weeeeeeee!!!!! Go faster John' yay! I wuv you John! [She held on to John. She trusted John with her life and they went to buy ice cream.]
John:
I love you too, Melly.
Melissa:
Can you promise me something John?
John:
Anything...
Melissa:
Promise me that you will marry me.
John:
Marry you?
Melissa:
Yes I want to marry you and we can live together and always come to the beach and buy ice cream.
John:
Melly, you're 5 and I'm 7. I'm not old enough to get married.
Melissa:
No, John when were older. But you got to promise me. Promise me we will be friends forever.
John:
I promise Melly. When were older we'll get married and come to the lake all the time.
Melissa:
Yay! You're my best friend John. I wuv you.
John:
Its I love you. Not I wuv you.
Melissa:
I did say I wuv you.
John:
What am I suppose to do with you?
Melissa:
Stay with me forever.
[They went back to their families and grew up. They went to the same preschool, middle school, and high school. When Melissa was picked on by Anne Gables, John was always there to defend her and when she needed him.]
Anne:
Ew. When was the last time you took a shower cuz you wreak.
Melissa:
Shut up. I took a shower yesterday.
Anne:
Hey girls isn't that the same shirt she wore yesterday. Don't you ever change your clothes? Are your parent's poor or what. [Melissa was 10 years old and her family wasn't rich so she didn't have a wide variety of clothes as most of the other kids at school so it wasn't uncommon for her to wear the same outfit once or twice a week. Melissa's mom had just got diagnosed with cancer. So she took care of her when she got home. Her father worked all day and her mom didn't work anymore.]
Melissa:
Anne leave me alone. Why do you always pick on me? I never do anything to you.
Anne:
So. Do I look like I care? I can pick on you all I want. And what are you going to do about it? Huh huh. [Anne pushed her to the floor trying to provoke her to fight yelling come on you little squirt fight back. Since Anne was older she had a bigger advantage than Melissa. Anne was in sixth grade and Melissa was in fourth grade.]
John:
What's going on here? Melly get up.
Anne:
Oh hi, John. Were just having some fun with the 4th grader.
[Anne had a huge crush on John and she was staring googily at him. She adored him and hung onto his every word. John in middle school was popular; all the boys looked up to him. He was the star of the basketball team, baseball, and football team. Melissa on the other hand was a late bloomer. She looked geeky; she had braces, and was all gangly.]
John:
It doesn't look like you're having fun. It looks like your picking on my best friend.
Anne:
Her? She's you're best friend? But she's such a freak.
John:
If I ever catch you messing or even talking to her again you will have to deal with me.
Anne:
John, is this a joke? Her? If I were you I'd choose my friends wisely. Or you'll end up just like her. An outcast.
John:
Is that a threat Anne? Do you know who you're threatening? Do you think that's a good idea?
Anne:
Whatever. Have fun with that. [She pointed disgustingly at Melissa on the floor.]
John:
Are you okay?
Melissa:
You didn't have to come in like that. I could have handled it myself.
John:
Aw... Melly I was just trying to help. I hate it when that girl comes up to you and picks on you.
Melissa:
You can't always fight my battles for me. I can do it myself you know.
John:
The least you can do is say thank you.
Melissa:
Well thank you. Now I'm off to class.
John:
Wait! Melly I'll walk you'.. So are you still coming to my party afterschool?
Melissa:
I don't think that would be a good idea. None of your friends like me.
John:
But you're my best friend I want you there. Can you please come?
[John gazed at her and gave her his puppy dog look that always worked. What John didn't know was Melly had the hugest crush on him. But she didn't know if John cared about her that way. So she didn't want to ruin things between them]
Melissa:
You know I can't say no to that. Yes I'll come to your party.
John:
Don't worry no one will bug you.
[John was there when her first boyfriend broke her heart. He was there for her when she cried about him. John loved her too but he wasn't sure if she loved him back the way he loved her. He wanted more than anything to relieve her pain. Melissa didn't get her first boyfriend till she was 14. By then she had grown out of her awkward stage. She didn't have braces and she was filled out nicely in all the right places.]
[After breaking up with Ryan, Melissa went home to cry. He had been avoiding her for two weeks now and she finally understood. He didn't like her anymore. He had only been using her to see how far he could get with her.]
Ryan:
Melly, don't you get it. I never liked you. I don't like you.
Melissa:
What are you talking about?
Ryan:
I was using you.
Melissa:
You're lying. You're kidding right? This is just one of your jokes.
Ryan:
No its not. I'm not kidding.
Melissa:
So why did you get with me? Why did you lead me on for so long?
Ryan:
I thought that I would eventually start liking you but I don't. So that's why I have been avoiding you for so long. I think it would be better if we don't see each other anymore.
Melissa:
So it was all a lie. [Tears began to well up in her eyes and she frantically tried to wipe them away. She didn't want him to see her cry. He was her first boyfriend she thought that they would be together forever. She knew it was silly to think that way but she dreamed.]
Ryan:
Melly don't cry I'm doing this so I don't hurt you.
Melissa:
it Ryan! You led me on for six months. Six months!
Ryan:
Can we at least be friends? I would at least really like that.
Melissa:
Friends don't use each other like that. Friends don't hurt friends so no Ryan we cant be friends.
[So now two hours later she was on her bed crying. She couldn't believe she ad wasted all that time on that loser and for what. Her house was a two story Victorian house. She had a huge oak tree right outside her window that sometimes scared her at night when she was sleeping. Usually when their parents wouldn't let them out anymore at night, John and Melissa would sneak out on the tree that connected them to their windows. John lived next door so all he had to do was walk along the tree and he'd be at Melissa's house. Just then she heard rustling outside her window, a tap startled her and there stood John.]
Melissa:
John go away. I want to be alone. [She didn't want him to see her cry. He had told her that Ryan wasn't a good guy. But against his wishes she had still gone for him and now she was heart broken.]
John:
Melly please let me in. Come on, I brought ice cream. And look it's your favorite cookies and cream.
Melissa:
Fine come in...
John:
Melly, what's wrong? [He realized at that moment that it was Ryan] What did that jerk do to you?
Melissa:
He broke up with me. [she sobbed]
John:
Why did he break up with you?
Melissa:
Because he said he never liked me that he was just using me all along.
John:
I could kill that jerk where is he?
Melissa:
No, don't'. maybe everyone's right maybe I'm not pretty enough. Maybe if I had done it with him he would have stuck around.
John:
Melly don't ever say that. Never ever say that. You're the most beautiful lest girl I have ever seen. And the day that you give a boy your virginity, you will never be the same. You don't need to do that till you're older. I would know I'm a guy. Ryan is stupid; he's dumb to have given you up. If you were my girl I would never give you up not even for all the money in the world.
Melissa:
Are you still a virgin?
John:
I'm saving it for the right person. People don't know that the right person could be right in front of their eyes. They could have been there all along. Melly I would never hurt you. Don't ever let a guy tell you what you are and what you don't have because you have it all.
Melissa:
You always know the right things to say when I'm upset.
John:
That's what I'm here for. Hey I know something that will cheer you up. How bout you come to my house tomorrow and we'll go to the lake. Just like old times me and you and I'll even give you a piggy back ride. And if you're good I'll even buy you an ice cream cone.
Melissa:
Yeah. Why not? It will be just like old times.
[John took Melissa to the lake the next. It had been years since they had been there. Just sitting on the sand and looking out in the horizon seemed to calm Melissa. It gave her much to think about. All she wanted to do was to forget. She wanted to forget about Ryan and just him. With her mom in remission things were sort of good. But seeing her mom battle with cancer for so long was hard. Just last month she lost all her hair. The chemotherapy took a lot out of her.]
Melissa:
Thanks John I really needed this you know.
John:
Anytime. I just miss hanging out with you.
[At that moment Melissa takes his sunglasses and puts them on. They looked better on her and she just wanted to look cool.]
John:
Hey give me back my sunglasses.
Melissa:
Your gonna have to catch me if you want them.
[Melissa takes off running and John runs after her. He runs and tackles her on the sand and they fall laughing. John lands on top of her and on impulse kisses her. At first it was forced and then Melissa kissed back like she was use to this. But something deep down told her not right now she didn't want this right now.]
John:
I just wanted to try that. You don't know how long I have been waiting to try that. I'm sorry.
Melissa:
John'. I'.
John:
Melly I've been in love with you since I was 5 years old.
Melissa:
Young love that's funny.
John:
Do you remember the promise I made you?
Melissa:
The promise?
John:
You made me promise you that I'd marry you when we were older. Do you still want me to fulfill that promise?
Melissa:
I really asked you that? Oh gosh I'm so embarrassed. I don't know I'm still too young to think about marriage.
John:
Well'. I got to still ask you. Will you be my girlfriend?
Melissa:
I don't know I just got out of a relationship. I''.
John:
You know you can trust me.
Melissa:
You got to promise me that you will never hurt me. I don't think I'll ever be able to take it if you hurt me.
John:
I promise. That's a promise I'm sure I'll keep.
[That day they told their parents. Their relationship lasted for two years but as these two years progressed; Melissa's mother got worse the cancer had spread. So Melissa spent most of her time at home with her mom. Tension between John and Melissa grew. Melissa and John didn't hang out as much as they use to. The year Melissa was 16 John was 18 and he was graduated from High school. Melissa missed his graduation and wasn't there for prom. John understood. But at the same time he still missed his girlfriend. They fought the night after his graduation. Melissa's mother at this point had no hope left it was only a matter of days before she died.]
John:
Melly? Are you ready? The party starts in an hour.
Melissa:
John I'm kind of busy right now.
John:
Well hurry up I don't want to miss the party.
Melissa:
Shhhh'. She's sleeping. Your gonna wake her.
John:
How is she doing?
Melissa:
It's just getting worse. John I don't'..
John:
No, Melly you promised me. You couldn't come to my graduation can you at least come to the party with me? We haven't hung out in weeks. I really miss you.
Melissa:
John I don't have time. She's not doing well right now.
John:
She's sleeping. She won't wake up. We will be back before she wakes up; I promise. Please'..
Melissa:
John' no I can't go. Anything can happen and besides my dad isn't here yet.
John:
The least you can do is come with me. Come on we will have fun. You need to get out of here and do something instead of being cooped up all day.
Melissa:
It isn't all about fun and games John. I don't have time. I thought you would at least understand that.
John:
Please'
Melissa:
Are you deaf? I said no. Can you just leave? I can't deal with this right now. I don't have time.
John:
When do you have time? Because it seems like you never have time for me anymore. You can't always be stuck in here.
Melissa:
John you're angering me. Don't you understand I'm under too much stress right now. I don't have time.
John:
You know what'. Whatever I'll go by myself.
Melissa:
John no'.. I didn't mean it.
[But it was too late John had stormed out of the house. Melissa regretted saying anything to him. But it was too much to take in for her. She couldn't deal with everything that was going on. So Melissa had gone back to fixing dinner.]
[At the party John sat on the couch while the music was loud. John had drunk 3 cans of beer already and was mad. He was feeling intoxicated but didn't stop. He had thoughts maybe it would be better off if they just broke up. It's probably already over. What's the point in being with her? He was leaving in 3 days and he wanted to tell her. He was going to tell her at the party, but she didn't want to come. She had no time. He understood that her mom was really sick, but she had promised to come with him. Maybe it would be better if they just broke things off now. He was leaving and how would it work. He would be at school in Michigan and that was states away from here. He felt miserable.]
Jane:
Hey John. Why you sitting here by yourself? Where's Melissa?
John:
She's at home'
Jane:
Why didn't she come?
John:
We had an argument and' can we talk about something else?
Jane:
Why did you guys fight?
John:
Because she doesn't have time for me anymore'
Jane:
You don't deserve that. You need someone who's going to be there for you when you need her.
John:
What? I can't hear you'.
Jane:
How bout we go upstairs and talk'
John:
Ok.
[Jane led John upstairs to a bedroom and left the door open. John sat on the bed a beer can in his hand and Jane sat next to him. He stared into empty space like there was something there to entertain him. He wouldn't look Jane in the eye. Every time he looked at her he saw three different girls.]
Jane:
You don't deserve that. You deserve someone like me who can show you how much I care. [Jane began kissing him. But John paid no attention he was too upset to even think about anything. And he began to feel dizzy from all the alcohol he had consumed.]
John:
I'm leaving in 3 days and she can't even come spend time.
Jane:
Yeah'
John:
Maybe I should go and apologize to her. I was being a jerk I should have under stood what was going on.
Jane:
John just shut up and kiss me.
[Jane kissed him full blown. At first John kissed back until he realized what was going on and pulled back. He looked at her straight and it felt like all the dizziness went away and he could think.]
John:
What are you doing? I have a girlfriend'. I have to go. You should have not done that.
[Right after John left; Melissa was upset. She didn't mean to get mad at him. She wasn't good under stress. And she knew that things hadn't been good between them lately and she was going to make it up to him by going to the party tonight. It was suppose to be the best party of the year especially since John had just graduated. She didn't even make it to his graduation. She hated herself and was sulking when her father entered the house.]
Mr. Sims:
What are you still doing here? I thought you going to that party tonight?
Melissa:
I was taking care of mom.
Mr. Sims:
Melly, you know you don't always have to be here. She's fine. You need to go and have fun. Go to the party have fun. Oh and say hi to John for me.
Melissa:
Thanks Dad.
[Melissa walked to the party a couple of blocks down. From her house she could hear the music. She walked in and there were people dancing and people drinking. Also there were people making out when she spotted Johnny. Johnny was John's best friend. Johnny was sort of swaying and had a beer in his hand when he approached Melissa.]
Melissa:
Johnny. JOHNNY!
Johnny:
Oh hey Melissa.
Melissa:
Have you seen John?
Johnny:
Yea I saw him go upstairs like 10 minutes ago.
Melissa:
Thanks.
[Melissa walked upstairs planning to talk to John. As she was walking up the stairs she saw a room and spotted John inside on the bed. She saw Jane Auburn. She hated Jane. Jane had always hated Melissa because she had gotten with John after he had broken up with her. Jane had never really gotten over John. Melissa walked toward the door about to yell out John's name when they kissed. Jane had first pushed herself on John, but then he kissed back. Melissa stopped and stared. Everything in her body stopped working. John her John was kissing someone else. He wasn't kissing her but someone else. Melissa ran downstairs crying. How could he? He couldn't. It couldn't have been him. It wasn't him. She knew it couldn't have been him. He would never have done that. But she knew deep inside that it was John it was her John. Melissa ran home and cried. She didn't know what to do. She loved him; she loved him with all her heart. But it hurt her. It hurt her so bad that he would kiss someone else. What did she know he probably was doing something else with her right now. The reason she had been avoiding him a lot lately was because she didn't want to say bye. She knew he was leaving but she didn't want him to go. They had so many plans for when she would graduate. Were those all lies? Was everything he said wrong? She didn't know what to think. She went home to cry her eyes out.]
[The tone of the phone ringing broke through Melissa's thoughts as she was calling John the next morning. She had made up her mind that maybe it would be better if they broke things off. It would give John a clean start and he would be able to do as he pleased. hecko? He said. Just hearing his voice made her want to cry.]
Melissa:
John? [He heard the sadness in her voice when she said his name.]
John:
Hi Melly. Is everything alright?
Melissa:
John, can you come over today? I think we need to talk. [It was hard to keep the tears out of her voice. She was about to break at any moment.]
John:
Sure' but what's wrong?
Melissa:
You should know John.
John:
I'm sorry about last night.
Melissa:
John. Just please come over.
John:
Okay I'll be over soon.
[After he fled from the party last night. John beat himself up for being so stupid. How could he have kissed her? He called himself every bad word in the English language. He hated himself. How could he do that to her? He couldn't let her find out. That would kill her. They were going to work things out. He would go and talk to her. He would postpone going to Michigan for as long as possible. He would make things right for her. But when she had called this morning she sounded like she was crying. Why was she crying? He couldn't see her yet? He was a pig. How could he? He needed to think things through before he saw her. He walked along the edge of the lake looking at the lake always seemed to calm him. It made him feel like new and that anything could happen. He did this for what seemed like hours till he finally decided that it was time to go and face her. He knew that sooner or later they had to talk and it wasn't going to be pretty.]
[He was so stupid. Did he really think that she would have never found out? How could he have done that? Just seeing her cry and give him the stare of hate. He hated himself he didn't want to live anymore. She was what kept him going. He had to fix things but she would never talk to him again. He knew how bad he had screwed things up with her. And from that thought he knew that she would never give him a second chance. John was down in the dumps for almost 3 weeks before he went to college. He left Minnesota behind and tried to start over. He knew that one day they would be together again. He hoped if they were really meant to be then they would be together again. He would make himself the same man she knew before. He would go and finish college and try to move on. Taking one last look at the house he turned and walked away. Everything of him and Melly was there. The thought just brought the sting of tears to his eyes. He took one last look at her and walked on to his new life in college. He didn't glance back at what use to be but looked forward to the future and what it would bring.]
[It had been 2 years since he had left home and he had accomplished most of what he went to college for. He was transferring out of his junior college to go to NYU. He and Melly had always planned to go to NYU together. But he hadn't heard from her in 2 years and didn't know where she had planned to go to college. John went to the school orientation in the summer at NYU he was getting a tour of the school.]
John:
Hi. I'm here for the tour of the school.
Reception:
Oh your five minutes early. Why don't you have a seat while the tour guide comes to give you a tour.
John:
Thank you.
[John sat on the bench and looked around things would be different here. A new start, his last relationship had ended badly and he wanted to start over. His ex-girlfriend had said he wasn't giving her what she needed and wasn't always there for her.]
Tour Guide:
Is everybody here? Were beginning the tour now. Now if you follow me we will start with the dorm rooms.
[The school was bigger than he thought. It had everything he had wanted. He was lost in thoughts when the tour guide began to talk about theatre. The tour guide handed him a flyer and on the top it read. NYU presents the play All Hallows Eve staring Melissa Sims and Blake Adams. So Melissa was here. She had come here. She always had loved acting in high school she had starred in 8 of the school productions. So she was going for her dream of being an actress.]
[The play had ended and she was anxious she wanted to know what everyone had thought about it. She had been working so hard all summer on this play making sure she had all her lines memorized. She had even gotten James to help run lines with her several times on their dates. It wasn't romantic but at least she got to see him. He was so busy since he went to Niagara Falls University and she went to NYU. Just hearing the applause had broken her thoughts and she smiled. She had gotten everything she had wanted. Or so she thought.]
Ms. Frank:
Congratulations Melissa! That was the best performance I have ever seen. Are you coming with the cast to celebrate?
Melissa:
No, Ms. Frank I have other plans.
Ms. Frank:
My dear you have talent I hope you pursue this.
Melissa:
I plan to.
[Melissa walked around the theatre trying to find her dad and James. James had called and said he was going to be late. She understood that his school was far, but she was disappointed that he couldn't even come to see her opening night. As she walked around people all around came to congratulate her and tell her how great she was. Just then out of the corner of her eye she saw someone. At first she wasn't sure who it was. Then she turned and she saw him. He looked so different since the last time she had seen him. He looked like he hadn't shaved in days but on him it didn't look bad it gave him a look that made him look sexy. He had grown at least 3 more inches taller. It had been two years but she could see that he had changed since their last encounter. She had been staring for a while until he finally met her gaze. She tried quickly to look away and pretend that she had been looking at something else but it was too late. She turned to walk away but he was already at her side.]
John:
Hi.
Melissa:
Hi. [She didn't know what to say to him. It had been years since she had seen him and their last encounter wasn't such a happy one.]
John:
How have you been?
Melissa:
I've been ok. Did you like the play? [She felt shy around him.]
John:
Yeah. I've got to say wow. That was really good. You finally did what you been saying you were going to do.
Melissa:
Thanks. How bout you how have you been? [She looked up over his head trying to see if she saw her dad or at least James. Then she saw him off to the side walking slowly toward her.]
John:
I've been good. Just transferred schools.
Melissa:
You're coming here?
John:
That was always the plan.
Melissa:
Um John it was nice to see you but I got to go.
John:
Wait do you think we could get some lunch to maybe catch up.
Melissa:
Not right now John I'll see you later bye.
John:
Bye.
[Melissa moved away from him as fast as she could and moved toward James. In his hands he had a bouquet of flowers and held chocolates. He gave her the grin that she loved. Just looking at him made her grateful that she had someone.]
James:
Hey babe. I heard it was a good show. I wish I had been here.
Melissa:
It's ok. At least you're here now. Wheres my''
Mr. Sims:
Melly! [He threw his arms around her and gave her the biggest bear hug she had ever gotten till she couldn't breathe.]
Melissa:
Dad I can't breathe. Let go please.
Mr. Sims:
Sorry. Oh I am so proud of you. That was the best performance I have ever seen. [James saw the exchange of the hugs and decided to go off to the restroom while they were talking. Just as Mr. Sims was happy for a moment it changed. There was a change on Mr. Sims face; his face went from happy to anger in two seconds. Melissa turned her head to see what he was staring at. And she saw it was John.]
Mr. Sims:
What is he doing here?
Melissa:
Dad it's a free country.
Mr. Sims:
He has some nerve to show his face up in here again. I'll go have a word with him.
Melissa:
Dad, please stop, it's been years can you please let that go. I have let it go. And I don't want any tension here while James here.
Mr. Sims:
Melissa. I'm just going to have one word with him now move. [Just then James showed up from the restroom.]
James:
Is everything alright?
Melissa:
Yea everything's fine. Dads just a little mad because he didn't get to bring me a bouquet of flowers like these that you bought me.
James:
It's ok Mr. Sims it can be from both of us I don't mind.
Melissa:
See Dad, he's wiling to share now you don't have to buy me some more. Now let's go to the restaurant I'm starving.
[James left the next morning and Melissa had time to finally think about what went on last night. John had showed up. He now attended NYU so she would be seeing him more. It's been years she already let go what happened. She could forgive him. But did she want to. School started up again the following week. It had been two weeks since she had seen John when he came up to her when she was at Starbucks drinking her frapachino.]
John:
So is now later.
Melissa:
What?
John:
Never mind. Do you mind if I join you?
Melissa:
Um' I was just about to leave.
John:
Are you just going to avoid me?
Melissa:
Do you think I should even talk to you?
John:
Melly, it's been years.
Melissa:
Don't call me that. Its Melissa now.
John:
To me you're still Melly.
Melissa:
I'm not the same little Melly I use to be John. I'm grown now. And besides why should I talk to you? I haven't heard from you in years.
John:
I was in college.
Melissa:
There's a thing called a phone or mail.
John:
Would you have seriously talked to me?
Melissa:
Yes.
John:
Truthfully.
Melissa:
No.
John:
I hurt you Melly. I just thought you needed your space from me.
Melissa:
You didn't even come for her funeral.
John:
I wanted to come. I wanted to come more than anything.
Melissa:
Then why didn't you come?
John:
Because I needed to make more of myself I needed to change myself.
Melissa:
You left. And you didn't come back once. You left and never turned back. Why?
John:
I hurt you Melly. I promised you I would never do that to you and I did. I didn't deserve anything.
Melissa:
I missed you. [She said barely audible. She was going to cry. She had hoped that he wouldn't leave for college. She wanted them to talk. She wanted to him to fight to stay for her. After two weeks of trying he gave up and left.]
John:
I'm sorry.
[She wiped the tear that began to fall down her face.]
Melissa:
Its ok the past is the past can't change it right.
John:
Melly'
Melissa:
Its Melissa now. Please don't call me that anymore. I have to go.
[Melissa got up and walked out. She went to the park. She finally let herself remember those last two weeks before John had left two years ago.]
[After John had left the house. Melissa went to her room and went numb. She didn't move or speak for hours. She finally stirred when she heard a tap at the window. She looked and saw John there. He stood there gazing at her. But she couldn't look at him she began to cry again. John looked at her and banged again. He said they needed to talk but Melissa wouldn't open the window, all she could do was cry. John finally left. The next morning she found 3 letters from him. But she couldn't and wouldn't read them. She burned them. John called 10 times a day for two weeks straight. Finally she came out of her numb state and left the house after two weeks. John had seen her leave the house and she walked to the lake. The one place that was there's. Just as she had expected John had followed her. She took a seat on a fallen tree right near the lake and she cried she let herself go and didn't hold back.]
Melissa:
God, I don't want to remember. I want to forget. You can help me. Help me forget all this. I don't want to know him anymore. I wish I never met him. It's just caused me pain. Please help me forget him and everything.
[John heard this. She wanted nothing to do with him anymore there was no point in being here. He walked away from her and his life there.]
[The following day Melissa went to class. She knew that during passing period she would probably see John. She began her search for him and after 20 minutes, she found him on a bench. She approached him and as if he felt her presence he looked up at her.]
Melissa:
It's later now.
John:
It is.
Melissa:
Yea it is.
John:
Want to go get lunch?
Melissa:
Yea that would be ok.
[John and Melissa began to talk about how their lives had gone after the break up but they never talked about the break up. John told Melissa that he had transferred from a junior college in Michigan and was studying to be a journalist. He was writing on the paper and is hopefully going to get a job at the New York global.]
John:
So were cool now?
Melissa:
Just promise me not to talk about the past. I'm still trying to move forward.
John:
It's fine with me. I'm not the same anymore as I use to be I'm 20 turning 21 and you your 18 turning 19.
Melissa:
Yea. I'm getting older by the day. Getting every wrinkle and old age spot I'm suppose to get.
John:
You're not old. I'm old compared to you.
Melissa:
I guess your right. Lol.
John:
You still like ice cream?
Melissa:
Yeah.
John:
Let's go get some.
[John and Melissa were back to their friendship like before. She never realized how much she had missed him. Just hanging out with him brought back memories that she had tried to forget. One day he brought up her mom.]
John:
That was funny.
Melissa:
Well if I did it of course it would be funny.
John:
Someone's a little too full of themselves.
Melissa:
Well I am an actress so that's how I'm supposed to be.
John:
Didn't you ever want to be something different.
Melissa:
My mom had always wanted me to be a doctor.
John:
I'm sorry. I didn't mean to remind you.
Melissa:
No its okay. She was still proud of me when I wanted to pursue acting. I just wish she was here to see me as I am now.
John:
She would be proud of you. Look at your dad, he was so happy to see you.
Melissa:
I just wish she was there you know. She wasn't here for the rest of my high school years and she didn't see me graduate. [Tears slowly began to well up in her eyes. John went over and hugged her. Things seemed to just fade and all that mattered was him and her. They were like this before someone cleared their throat.]
James:
Melissa?
Melissa:
Oh James, hi. [She wiped away the tears.]
John:
Hi I'm John. And you must be'..
James:
I'm James, I'm Melissa's boyfriend. [James pulled Melissa towards him and held his arm protectively over her.]
John:
Oh...
Melissa:
John was here helping me with my lines of my script. [Melissa could feel the tension in the room. James and John seemed to be sizing each other up seeing who was better. Melissa felt awkward around them. This continued until John decided to leave.]
John:
Well I'll get going I have to take care of some things. I'll see you later Melly. [John grabbed his jacket and left her house.]
Melissa:
Don't call me Mel'. [But she cut herself off because he was already out the door.]
James:
What was that?
Melissa:
What was what?
James:
You know what I'm talking to about.
Melissa:
You mean John?
James:
Yes I mean John.
Melissa:
John is an old friend.
James:
He doesn't seem to be an old friend.
Melissa:
We use to date. But that was two years ago.
James:
Couldn't you tell the way he was looking at you? He still has feelings for you. Look at the way he was holding you.
Melissa:
James he's just a friend. He doesn't mean anything to me anymore. And oh well if he still likes me, you're my boyfriend. I love you. [She looked into his eyes hugging him. He believed her but deep inside she knew she was lying to him and herself. She knew that she still had feelings for him.]
Melissa:
This is a surprise. What are you doing here? I thought you had to work today.
James:
Well I missed you. I wanted to see you and oh well if I miss work for a day it won't kill anyone.
Melissa:
Well I missed you too.
James:
Why don't we go get something to eat?
Melissa:
Oh I got something to eat with John right before you came.
James:
Oh well I see.
Melissa:
You're not mad are you?
James:
No its okay you didn't know I was coming anyway.
Melissa:
You wanna help me run lines?
James:
Sure why not? But babe I got to go back tomorrow morning I would have came earlier but my bus was late.
Melissa:
You can't stay longer?
James:
Sorry babe but I got classes in the morning.
[Melissa didn't know that James didn't have classes in the morning. James had another girl on the side at his school. He liked them both and couldn't choose. He really liked Melissa but he wanted more. Melissa wasn't ready to give up anything. She wanted to save it for when she was older and ready. So he looked for it in his other girlfriend Katie.]
[John went to the Niagara Falls caf' once a every other week. He liked the view and it gave him some time to think about things. He liked the falls it calmed him and the caf' had the best scones. Just seeing Melly again brought back his feelings. She had never told him that she had a boyfriend. He had thought about seducing her making her fall for him again but it didn't matter anymore. She had moved on. She found someone else to give her love to. He meant nothing to her she had already a mess. He was wallowing in this when his thoughts were broken by a familiar voice.]
James:
Yeah, babe this is a good cafe they serve really good scones.
Katie:
Why couldn't you come over on Thursday?
James:
I had to work babe. You understand don't you?
Katie:
Yeah, but I got a new painting and I wanted your help to see where it could go.
James:
Ooo. I'm sorry I missed that. [John peered over his shoulder and looked to where the voice had come from. And he couldn't believe it. It was James and he was with another girl. He wouldn't have thought anything of it if it hadn't have been for them holding hands. Just then the girl got up and left to the restroom. John saw his chance and got up to approach him.]
John:
hecko James.
[James brought his head up at the mention of his name. and was surprised to see John sitting in the seat of his girlfriend Katie.]
James:
John what are you doing here?
John:
I come here every other week for the scones. Are you here with someone?
James:
Yes I'm here with my friend Katie.
John:
I see, tell me do you always call your friends babe and hold their hands.
James:
I was just touching, touching her hand [he stuttered.]
John:
This puts me in a very hard position.
James:
And why is that? [He said sarcastically]
John:
She's my best friend'
James:
Then why don't you tell her anything right now. Why aren't you running to her and telling her what happened?
John:
Because that's not my place to tell her. Even though you're a scumbag and I would want nothing more than to kick your butt, I want you to tell her.
James:
And if I don't?
John:
Then I will and you will lose something that was there for you.
James:
Why do you care? I see the way you look at her. There's more there than friendship.
John:
I'll admit I still care about her but her heart right now is somewhere else and I don't want to mess that up. She doesn't deserve me anyhow.
[John left the caf' with a promise from James he would tell her next time he saw Melly. John walked back to school and decided that it was time to visit home for a while to get his thoughts straight. He hadn't been home and maybe it would be better to see his dad and speak with Mr. Sims about things.]
[Melissa was so into the script that she didn't notice the phone ring. It had rung maybe five times before she finally answered. Melissa didn't understand why John didn't answer her phone calls. She had been calling him for the past three days and hadn't heard from him once.]
Melissa:
hecko?
James:
Hey babe.
Melissa:
James! [She was so happy to hear his voice.]
James:
What are you up to?
Melissa:
Studying my script. John was supposed to be over to help run lines but I haven't heard from him.
James:
John hasn't told you anything has he?
Melissa:
No. why?
James:
Oh I was just saying I mean he hasn't called to explain why he isn't there.
Melissa:
No, he hasn't.
James:
Shows how much he cares about you. If he really cared he would be over there right now helping you.
Melissa:
Something might have come up and besides he could be trying to study for finals in two weeks.
James:
If I were him I wouldn't miss a minute with you babe.
Melissa:
Then why aren't you here James?
James:
Aww babe you know I'm busy.
Melissa:
Too busy for your own girlfriend?
James:
No babe it's just that'..
Melissa:
Excuses, excuses, call me when you're not busy and maybe I'll free my time for you.
[John went back home. But what he went back to wasn't the same anymore. His dad wasn't home and apparently had moved. So he went to Melly's old house. He stood on the porch preparing to knock when the door opened and out came Mr. Sims.]
Mr. Sims:
What are you doing here John?
John:
I came to speak to you sir.
Mr. Sims:
There's nothing I have to talk to you about.
John:
Sir, please hear me out.
[Mr. Sims made a move to close the door but John held it stead fast.]
John:
I'm sorry sir.
Mr. Sims:
For what?
John:
For hurting your daughter. I was young and stupid. I wasn't thinking straight when I hurt her. I know that doesn't make a difference. But I wanted to apologize to you because I disrespected you. I had no right.
Mr. Sims:
You're right. I had so many high hopes for you John. I and Miranda took you in as another son. And for you to go and hurt our daughter like that hurt us. We had always thought that you and Melly would make it. That you would get married one day.
John:
I know and I'm sorry sir. All I am asking you is for your forgiveness. I never meant to hurt you or anyone else especially your daughter. Melly has forgiven me why cant you?
Mr. Sims:
It's hard gaining back trust when I saw my daughter cry almost everyday for months straight. She wouldn't eat and couldn't sleep because her heart was broke. I don't think you will ever be able to understand that.
John:
I understand because I had mine broken too. It was broken as well because I lost her. She was my world.
Mr. Sims:
I know I could see it in your eyes when you left. And I understand that we all make mistakes. But that doesn't make it right John. I don't think I will ever be able to forgive you until you can forgive yourself.
John:
I can't forgive myself but if she's willing to let it go then I will try and forgive myself.
Mr. Sims:
I forgive you John. I'm sorry it took so long for you to apologize.
[With that cleared out of the way, John got up and walked to the bus stop to take it home.]
[Melissa went back to working on her script a week went by before she had heard from John. She kept working on her script till the following week of opening night. Melissa heard applause from the audience and in the house she saw John. He was clapping and whistling the loudest. Just as Melissa went off stage to greet him but James got to her first with a bouquet of roses.]
James:
I'm sorry babe. Can you ever forgive me?
Melissa:
You actually came?
James:
Of course I came. I wouldn't miss it for the world.
Melissa:
Aww thank you. [She reached up and kissed him. John came in and saw this he cleared his throat and spoke.]
John:
James, I'm surprised to see you here.
James:
Yeah well I wanted to see Melissa's performance and I was going to take her out to celebrate.
Melissa:
John, I'm happy you came. But where have you been?
John:
I went home to take care of something's.
Melissa:
Oh is everything ok.
John:
I don't know why don't you ask James is everything ok?
Melissa:
What are you talking about? James what is he talking about?
John:
Yeah James what am I talking about?
James:
I don't know. [He shrugged off what John meant. John got mad and stormed out of the theatre.]
Melissa:
Wha- what is going on? John? John! [She ran off after John to find out what was wrong.]
James:
Melissa just let him go. [He yelled after her.]
[John was three blocks away before Melissa had caught up to him. It was raining so the rain hit her hard and was pounding down in huge sleets. She was drenched when she took him by the shoulders and tried to get him to face her. But John shrugged her off. He was wet as well but didn't care. Nothing mattered anymore not with this.]
Melissa:
John. John talk to me what's wrong?
John:
I thought he would tell you. He promised me he would tell you.
Melissa:
Tell me what? What are you talking about?
John:
Ask him. Tell him to tell you. Ask him what he's really doing when he's not with you here.
Melissa:
John. What is he doing? If you know tell me.
John:
Melly. I don't know if you can take it.
Melissa:
Just tell me John I think I can.
John:
Melly'.err'.. [He struggled for words. But she held him steadfast he didn't want to tell her. He didn't want to hurt her not again and especially like this. So he chose to walk away.]
Melissa:
John. John.
[John stopped. And turned to look at her. He couldn't hold it in anymore he wasn't going to tell her but it came out before he could take it back.]
John:
He's cheating on you.
Melissa:
What?
John:
He's cheating on you. [He couldn't take it back.]
Melissa:
No that's not true. He can't be. He's been busy.
John:
No, when he's not with you he's messing with this girl named Katie. I saw them together at a caf'.
Melissa:
They could just be friends hanging out. He's not cheating on me.
John:
Melly, I know he is he admitted it to me. And do friends hold hands and call each other babe? I don't think so.
Melissa:
No.
John:
Talk to him yourself. [He walked away leaving Melissa to walk back to the theatre by herself to where James was sitting in a seat waiting for her. She walked as if in a daze. She didn't know if what John was telling her was true but at the same time she believed it.]
James:
Where's John? [He asked sarcastically.]
Melissa:
He left.
James:
Well we won't let him ruin your big day. Where do you want to go?
Melissa:
Is it true?
James:
No.
Melissa:
How do you even know what I'm talking about?
James:
Oh then never mind.
Melissa:
No, what are you saying no to? You have to know what I am talking about if you answered my question.
James:
Melissa what are you talking about?
Melissa:
I think you know what I am talking about.
James:
What he told you was a lie. It's not true.
Melissa:
No, James you're a liar. I don't believe anything you tell me. And you know what were through.
James:
No, Melissa it's not true.
Melissa:
It's not Melissa its Melly and James I hope you rot in heck.
James:
You never liked me. You were always in love with John. I had to cheat.
Melissa:
screw you James. And you're right I don't love you. I love someone else and that is John.
[Melissa left the theatre and didn't look back she ran out and caught a cab. Meanwhile John was wandering the streets. His clothes and hair was wet but he didn't care. He was walking when a car honked at him. He stared at the taxi as if it was from another world. He saw Melissa exit from it. 'What the?' he said but was cut off because Melissa ran into his arms and kissed him. She wouldn't let go she continued to kiss him. Their bodies were wet from the rain but it just added to the effect.]
John:
What are you doing here?
Melissa:
You were right. I just took too long to see it.
John:
I was right about what?
Melissa:
You never notice a good thing even when it's right in front of you.
John:
What about James?
Melissa:
To heck with James. He is a jerk he can go and mess with any girl he wants because were through.
John:
I meant to tell you before'.
Melissa:
Oh it doesn't matter what matters is this here where we are.
John:
So what are we suppose to do now?
Melissa:
I don't know our futures not written. But I get the vibe that we are supposed to be together. Unless you have other feelings.
John:
No my feelings are right on the same track as yours.
Melissa:
I love you John.
John:
I love you too Melly.
[John and Melissa went back in the routine of getting to know each other better. It had been two years since they had last been together and things were a lot different from when that was. John got a job on the New York Times and was one of the youngest journalists on their teams. It was his dream to work on the New York Times and he had finally achieved it. Melissa was working on a play. Ms. Frank had said that a talent scout would be coming from California looking for new talent. So Melissa worked day and night studying her lines when John was busy doing a story. The roar of applause after the play struck Melissa. It didn't matter if the talent scout didn't like her at least she knew that the crowd did. As Melissa was leaving with the cast to go get dinner Ms. Frank called her over.]
Ms. Frank:
Melissa I would like you to meet someone. This is Jack Andrews he's from a talent agency in California.
Melissa:
It's nice to meet you Mr. Andrews.
Jack:
My father isn't here my father use to be Mr. Andrews you can call me Jack.
Melissa:
Well hi Jack.
Ms. Frank:
Well I will leave you two alone to talk.
Jack:
That was a great performance. One of the best I have seen when I have come to New York.
Melissa:
Thank you.
Jack:
Well Melissa the reason I wanted to talk to you was because I'm doing a movie in California and I would like to cast you as the lead role. This would be your big break the part seems perfect for you.
Melissa:
Wow! Are you serious? What's the name of the movie?
Jack:
It's called the tale of two lovers. It's a romance/comedy. So would you be willing to do it? We begin shooting it next month.
Melissa:
Next month. That's really close. Yes I would be willing to do it.
Jack:
Great. Just give me your number I will give you a call and we can schedule when we will finalize the paperwork.
[Melissa was excited this is what she was striving for. A movie this could really help her get noticed especially in California. She couldn't wait to tell John. But what about John? What would happen to him and her? This is what she wanted but she loved John. Could she really leave?]
[Two weeks later, John and Melissa were at home talking about Johns lead story he was working on. Melissa had finally decided that she was going to go to California. She wanted to be in this movie. And she was going to tell John now that he was here and had a free time. She had been putting off for so long that she thought it was time to tell him, especially since he was in a good mood.]
Melissa:
John?
John:
Yes.
Melissa:
I have something to tell you.
John:
Is it something bad?
Melissa:
Not exactly. [She kept fidgeting with her hands and couldn't look John in the eyes. John grabbed her hands and turned her face toward him.]
John:
You can tell me.
Melissa:
I got cast in a movie.
John:
That's great. When?
Melissa:
A scout came to my last play and liked how I did so he cast me for a movie called a tale of two lovers. It's a romance/comedy.
John:
When and where is it?
Melissa:
We begin filming in two weeks. The only thing is it's in California.
John:
It's in California?
Melissa:
Yes it's in California. But I don't have to go; there will always be other movies I could try out for'. [John cut her off he wouldn't let her stay for him. She wanted to pursue her dream he wouldn't stop her at anything.]
John:
Go. This is a once in a lifetime opportunity.
Melissa:
What about us?
John:
I'll still be here when you come back.
Melissa:
But John, I don't want to go; I want to stay here with you.
John:
I won't let you ruin this. You're going to go.
Melissa:
Alright I'll go. But I won't see you for months. Are you sure you won't find someone else while I'm gone?
John:
I don't want someone. I will wait for how long it takes till you come back.
Melissa:
I love you John.
John:
I love you.
[As the weeks progressed it was getting time for Melissa to go. They spent every waking minute together. John tried to miss work whenever he could. They went shopping and packed up all her things into boxes ready to be shipped off. On the night before, Melissa went to John's house. She wanted one last way to remember John and the time they spent until the next time they saw each other.]
Melissa:
John, I have a favor to ask.
John:
What?
Melissa:
There's one last thing you could do for me before I leave.
John:
Tell me I'll do it.
Melissa:
I want to lose it.
John:
Lose what?
Melissa:
It John. That thing you do when you're married.
John:
Are you sure? You can wait you don't have to do this for me.
Melissa:
I don't want to wait. I want to do it with you. You're the only one I would ever want to do it with.
John:
Melly, I don't know.
Melissa:
What? You don't love me.
John:
Of course I love you.
Melissa:
Then prove it.
John took her to her plane and she left. Now three months later she was feeling sick. She still kept communication with John by phone or Mail. But she had been throwing up a lot lately and she hadn't had her period in months. She was doing lousy on the movie and couldn't keep up. She kept having mood swings and gave attitude to John whenever he called. So Melissa went to the pharmacy, she didn't expect to be pregnant but she had a feeling she was. Now she was over the toilet looking at the positive blue sign,]
Melissa:
How could I be so stupid? I have this movie to finish and I'm pregnant. Pregnant! For gods sake what am I suppose to do with a kid.
[Her belly was beginning to show. She didn't know how to tell John. But at the same time she blamed him. So Melissa began to avoid him. She wouldn't take any of his calls and wouldn't even go on her e-mail anymore.]
Julie:
Melissa, are you okay? [It had been the third time that day that Melissa had gone to the restroom to throw up.] You don't look so good?
Melissa:
I'm fine. Just a little sick.
Julie:
Can I ask you a personal question? [Julie was another actress on the movie who was playing Melissa's best friend.]
Melissa:
Sure.
Julie:
There are rumors going around that you might be pregnant. Is that true?
Melissa:
Whose been saying that?
Julie:
I've heard it from different people. And if you are Jack won't let you finish the movie. So is it true?
Melissa:
Can I trust you?
Julie:
Yes. I won't tell a soul.
Melissa:
I'm two months along. And I haven't told my boyfriend he's in New York. And my stomach keeps getting bigger and I can't even see my ankles anymore. I don't know what to do.
Julie:
If I were you I'd go on maternity leave. You will still be able to finish the movie just it will be postponed till the baby is born. Just if I were you I would tell Jack or he might just replace you because he hasn't been too happy with all these breaks you have been taking.
Melissa:
I'll tell him.
[John had been trying to call Melissa for 1 week straight and all he got was her voicemail. He was worried last time she spoke to him she was mad. Lately she had been getting mad easily she had been having weird moods. At first he thought PMS but now he wasn't so sure. He took a leave and decided to go to California. John arrived at Melissa's apartment and knocked. He wasn't sure if she was home. So he knocked one more time and slowly the door opened. Melissa stepped out. She looked different, she was pale, her stomach looked bigger from the last time he had seen her and she didn't look too happy to see him.]
Melissa:
What are you doing here?
John:
I came to visit you.
Melissa:
Why?
John:
You haven't been answering my calls or e-mails. And besides cant I come visit my girlfriend.
Melissa:
John, this isn't a good time. I haven't been feeling well. [Just then she made a dash for the restroom. She ran in and threw up. John came in and held her hair back, rubbing her temples trying to make her feel better.]
John:
What's wrong did you get food poisoning?
Melissa:
No, John. I'm pregnant.
John:
Melly, we will fix this. We can go back to New York and you can have the baby there. We will work this out and tell your dad.
Melissa:
Ok. But John this is going to kill him. You don't know what he will do.
John:
We will fix this. I will be there for you threw the whole thing. I won't leave you.
[Melissa took a maternity leave from the movie and w
