Sweat to Death
Lying here
I recall what I have seen:
Sixty-two years
Of hard labor—
Listening to train tracks
Smoke blowing out of pipes,
Suffocating me
While I shoveled gravel into piles
To make a few dollars
So my babies could have dinner at night.
I have watch my babies grow into women
Who married handsome men,
Sailors who have taken my babies away—
Taken my only darlings away from me
While I carried on with my work
Day after day
Whistling the same tune
To my death
When finally the sweat from my forehead
Became a drink for the arid soil
Where I lie now.
