A Never-Ending Novel
I am a writer from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania who writes teen horror novels. I have been working on my latest novel for about 6 months, a month before I moved into my apartment, but ever since I moved in I have been dealing with the noisiest neighbors that I ever had. These people are so rude and obnoxious to the point where I can’t even concentrate on the subject of my writing. This novel has to be ready by the end of the year in December, but the noises are so unbearable I can hardly keep my ideas flowing. Here it is April 16, 1985 in Sacramento, California where I have decided to live at for the time being so I can write in a more peaceful manor, but little did I know all of this ruckus would come about.
The Shady Hills Apartment Complex is supposedly a private facility which provides maximum security and broad wall structure to attain inaudible sound. Apparently the ad in the newspaper told a humongous lie to enhance their credibility, and this is really false advertisement however we’ll worry about that later. Right now I am trying to figure out a way to get these people to shut up. Every single day this is what I have to deal with while I am trying to work, and I am quite sick of it. Whenever I’m in my zone writing paragraph after paragraph I hear stomping, hollering, cursing, and crashing. The worst thing is they’re right next door instead of being above me where I can easily bang a broom on the ceiling to get their attention. Whenever I tap on the walls to try and calm my neighbors down they are either too loud to hear me, or they may just completely ignore me. I’ve done everything in my power to try and get these people to be quiet long enough for me to finish at least a chapter.
One day I was starting on the eighth chapter of my novel, and then I suddenly hear the racket once again. “I’m sick of you drinking so much,” said Madison, snatching the bottle out of her husband’s hand; “every time you get drunk you start acting like a lunatic!” Even through the thickened walls I heard everything that was said, and I heard her husband even more than I heard her voice when he said. “And I’m sick of you always nagging you dirty blonde,” said Jimmy, stumbling against the wall; “You’re always downing me and calling me a drunken maniac, yet all you do is nag, nag, nag!” She looks at him with the most petrifying look on her face. “Just who do you think you are talking to? I cook for you, clean for you, do your laundry, and anything else that needs to be done around here I have all rights to nag all I want!” she replied “Well you don’t have to do it so much! I’m just having me a little drinky drink to ease my pain, you remember when I lost everything,” He said; I were playing for the Sacramento Kings now I’m the King of Jack Daniels.” He always seems to blame his drinking problem on the fact that he lost his temper on the coach during a game and got kicked off of the team 5 years ago. Ever since then he’s been drinking his life away trying to get rid of all of his stress, but becomes addicted to the feeling of being drunk which causes daily problems between he and his wife.
Their life is quite interesting because of how it so happens that he was once famous for playing the world’s most interesting sport, but I would rather them keep the noise level down because I really need to finish my novel by December. I decided to file a complaint on these people because I have been dealing with this crap for far too long and I’m sick of being ignored. Contacting my landlord was pretty hard because he rarely answers his phone unless you really bug him about it or leave a message about rent money then he will immediately respond. Once I got in touch with him I began to tell him about my novel and how I have to get it done and published by December, and also how I am being disturbed by the people next door to me.
“Hi Mr. Andrews, this is Carl Jamison from the 5th floor apartment 506, and I called to make a complaint about the people next door to me in 507. It seems as if they are having some personal issues and I just wanted to see if you could get them to calm down a little with all of the arguing because I am trying to work.” I said
“Mr. Jamison, I understand that you are a novelist and a very swell one at that, but I can’t just tell people they can’t argue amongst themselves in the privacy of their own home, however, I can tell them to lower the noise a little to fulfill your peaceful needs. If this noise continues you let me know and I will surely evict this married couple. You’re not the only complaint I got about Jimmy and Madison so I am not surprised at you calling me. I will make sure that this gets handled properly and delicately to ensure that nothing hostile continues to happen next door to your apartment.” He replied
“Thank you sir I really appreciate your concern of peace and quiet in your facility, and I would also like to say that this will truly benefit the future of my writing curriculum.” I was so happy he said he would talk to them for me because my head was about to explode with distress because I weren’t able to concentrate on anything. Now that he has straightened everything out I feel extremely relieved of all worries, so now I can finally finish writing my novel.
I started back on my novel on the Thursday of the week after my complaint; however the couple eventually started to get right back loud as ever. I called the landlord once again to make sure they permanently get evicted from the premises because enough is enough. Mr. Andrews knocked on Jimmy and Madison’s door about ten times before they answered the door. When they finally came to the door he explained the outcome of the noise complaints because he has already warned them once before. He evicted the two due to too many noise complaints and ordered them out by the end of the month which was two weeks from now.
I was so happy when I found out that they had been evicted because I was able to concentrate on my works of literature rather than the works of a bickering married couple. I got six more chapters done over the time period of 3 months, but right when I thought all the noise was done and over with something very bizarre happens out of the ordinary. I was working on the final touches on the chapter I was working on and I found out that we were having some new tenants coming to check out the apartment next door. I was really hoping that these people weren’t as noisy as the last because I really don’t want to have to get them evicted also. Comes to find out they’re two college students that attend California State University names Todd and Chase. Todd is an economics major and Chase is a social work and people studies major. Don’t get me wrong these kids are smart, but they are huge party animals I can tell by the way they’re playing their loud music already which is getting on my nerves to begin with. These men haven’t been living here any more than an hour and they’re already getting too crazy
It was a Saturday on June 21 when I were revising the previous chapters to my novel, but little did I know later that night I would run into an even bigger world of chaos. These students were having a graduation party to award their success in 4 years of college. There was music, alcohol, women, and all of the things they need to disturb me from being consistent of writing my novel. They weren’t yet aware that I was trying to finish up on my book. Hours had passed by before I got sick of it and called the police. I told them that they graduated from the University, and they acted like they didn’t even care about them making the noises. They told me to let the kids have fun because they just graduated, but I am trying to focus on my novel because I really need this big break. After the police left from my apartment I decided to call my landlord once again to file a complaint on my new neighbors. He came by their apartment and told them that they need to cut the noise down a little, but it looks to me as if he joined them after telling them that. Seen him go into their apartment, yet I didn’t see him come out which was horrible for me because there literally wasn’t anything that I could do to stop the noises. Although the music was turned down to a low level of volume to the point where I can get a little focus going on my project, the college students next door continuously made bumping noises which were super annoying. I couldn’t stand it, all of the yelling and screaming I was hearing, eventually gave me a slight migraine headache which was a kind of excruciating pain in the back of my head.
Then I knew there was nothing I could do about the noises that were coming from that apartment. No matter what I did to stop it the noise still continued, yet they inspired me to talk about a cabin party going wrong and everyone getting killed by a delusional old man who lives across the river from the cabin. I thought of that idea by mixing my anger of being ignored, pushed aside, and disturbed by the noises of the party all together.
Sadly, I had to push back the release date of my novel because I wasn’t able to finish in the time frame that I set for myself. There was so much commotion over the last few months I had to finish it up I never even had enough time to revise, edit, and rewrite. I would like to finish my novel in time for my next date but it seems as if I can’t find an ending. This is the most disappointing experience I’ve ever had in a while because I feel as if I am a failure for not doing what I told my readers/fans I would do. With that being said, in the time frame of a year and a half I will have finished my novel. I just have to find out what do I want the final events of the novel to be seeing that it is one of my longest books ever written in a bout 10 years. It seems like this book is never going to end unless I just put a big stop to it all together.
