A New Change in Life
A New Change in Life
I wake up to an alarm so loud it hurts my ears and then I remember today is September 2nd. The worst day of my life. It is the first day of my new school. I am going to Hillton Middle School. My twin siblings Penelope and Peter are in the same class as each other, so I don’t think they are as nervous as I am. This morning while I was getting ready anxiousness ran through me. My stomach started hurting, it felt like someone was punching me in the stomach, but I tried to keep telling myself that I will be fine, and I will make new friends.
“Penelope, Paulina, Peter time to go to school.” Mom yells from downstairs.
“Coming.” We all say at the same time. Mom makes our lunches in the morning for us.
“Come on kids get in the car! You're going to be late for school.” Hollars mom, you can tell she is getting mad. All of a sudden I hear someone crying and it sounds like it is coming from the bathroom. I open the door to see Penelope sitting on the floor with a puddle of tears around her.
“Penelope what’s wrong?” I ask as tears fell down her face. She doesn’t answer so I close the bathroom door and go tell mom that Penelope is crying in the bathroom. Mom darts out of the car and says,
“UGH we don’t have time for this.”
Peter and I sit in the car patiently waiting for them to come out. I sit there thinking about the day and how everyone will laugh at me.
When mom and Penelope come out from the house Penelope does not look happy. She still has tears rolling down her face. When she gets in to the car I say,
“What was wrong Penelope?”
“I am nervous to start a new school.” She says softly.
Finally Penelope stops crying and we are already at their school.
“Have a great day kids, love you.” Mom says when Penelope and Peter get out of the car. My school is 5 minutes away. The bell is going to ring soon so we need to get there fast. Mom asks,
“Are you nervous for a new school?”
“ Yeah, very.”
“Well sweetie don’t be worried you will make plenty of friends.”
Mom is driving so fast with the windows down that my hair goes all over the place. I have to tell her to roll them up. Pulling into the parking lot of school I get butterflies in my stomach. I could only imagine kids laughing at me or making fun of me and pointing. I thought I was going to be late on my first day. Walking into school I hear obnoxious laughter, and lockers slamming.
When I walk to my locker I am crammed between two people that will not stop talking to each other. They are talking so loud it hurts my ear. I go to my first class which is math, when I get to math the teacher tells me where to sit and it is by a window. The wind rattles it and it sounds like a monster trying to get in. I sit by short girl with light blonde hair. I sit down and get out my math book and binder.
“Hello class my name is Mrs. Peckerman. I am so glad to have you guys in my class. Today you will need a piece of paper and a pencil.”
“Hi.” I say quietly to the girl next to me.
“Hello what’s your name?” She asks, turning her head from looking at the teacher to looking at me.
“I am Paulina Welches and what’s your name?”
“Bethanie Ragrug.”
“Nice to meet you Bethanie.”
“Girls could you please not talk while I am talking.” Says Mrs. Peckerman sternly turning towards us. I can feel my face getting hot and I know my cheeks are as red as a tomato.
“Today we will be writing a letter all about ourselves. You will be telling me about what you like to do and if you participate a lot in class.”
Dear Mrs. Peckerman,
I love to play volleyball. This year I just started cheerleading and I have had one practice so far. I love reading and the book I am reading now is The Maze Runner. I love math and last year at my old school they had a math club and I was in it and I loved it.
I don’t think that I participate a lot because I have a fear of talking in front of people. I love talking and will talk your head off, but I do not like to talk in front of a lot of people. I really do not like when a teacher calls on me when I am not raising my hand because if I am not raising my hand it probably means I do not know the answer. If I am confident in my answer and I know I am correct and I will raise my hand but, otherwise I probably won’t.
Mrs. Peckerman gave us the whole class to write the letter. I finished with five minutes left of class before the bell rings.
“So what do you like to do?” Bethanie asked
“Well I started cheerleading this year. I also like to play volleyball.”
“Oh really I love to play volleyball too, I played last year and I also want to play again. You should join the team!”
“Bye class have a good rest of your first day of school. Mrs. Peckerman said loudly as the bell rang. When I go to my locker I realize that Bethanie is two lockers down from mine. After I’m done with social studies it is time for lunch. At lunch Bethanie and I sit together
“So don’t you have any friends here?” Inquired Bethanie.
“No I am new here.” I say a little embarrassed.
“Really! I didn’t know that I thought you had always been here. I am new also.”
“Where did you move from?” I asked.
“I lived in Florida. Where did you move from?”
“I moved from Waukesha.”
“Oh I see.”
“Okay kids time to go to your next class. Have a good rest of your day.” The lunch lady says but you can barely hear her over the roaring of the kids.
Finally the last bell rings, indicating it’s the end of the first day of school. I’m so relieved that I made it through the first day of school.
“Hey mom.”
“Hi sweetie. How was your first day? Did you make any friends?”
“Well my day was good and yes I did, her name is Bethanie.”
“Well that’s good sweetie.”
“Yeah she is really nice.”
When we get to Penelope and Peters school Peter looks sad.
“Oh no. What happened now?” Mom says
When they get in the car mom says,
“What’s wrong Peter?” Mom asks while trying to merge through all the cars.
“Nobody talked to me all day.”
“Well did you try talking to someone?”
“No I was expecting them to talk to me.” Peter claimed with a frown on his face.
“Well honey you can’t just expect people to do that.”
“I know I just, I just don’t like to talk to people that much.”
“Well tomorrow try and talk to others okay?”
“Okay mom.”
When we get home there is a banner that says
HAPPY FIRST DAY OF SCHOOL!
That must have been mom! When I wake up the next morning for school I am not as nervous as I was yesterday.
“ Hey Penelope how are you doing today?” I asked as I straighten my puffy brown hair.
“ Good! I am not so nervous.”
“Well that’s good.”
The second day of school went so fast. When I get into the silver car mom calls her “racecar”, I tell her all about my day.
“ Mom guess what!” I declare loudly.
“ What?”
“ You know how I have been wanting to read the Divergent series?”
“ Yeah.”
“ Well we are reading it in comm arts.” I say with excitement.
When we get by Peter and Penelope, Peter has a tremendous smile on his face.
“ Hi Peter. How was your day?” I exclaimed.
“ It was good. Guess what. I can not let you guess because it is too exciting. I made a friend. His name is Alex.”
“ Great job Peter.” Mom and I say at the same time.
“ Penelope how was your day?” Mom asks knowing she did not ask her that yesterday
“ Good.” She says with attitude not looking at her.
“Why do you give Mom that type of answer?” I say knowing she is mad that nobody asked her how her day was yesterday.
“Well yesterday nobody asked me how my day was! And in case you were wondering I made a friend her name is Ingrid and she does gymnastics.”
“ Oh I’m sorry sweetie.” Mom says with a sad look on her face.
Penelope does not respond. When she does that we know she is mad.
When we get home we celebrate that we have all made friends but Penelope decided she does not want to join us. We have ice cream and mine and Peters favorite dinner liver with onions.
The first month of school goes by so fast. I can not believe it.
At lunch Bethanie asks me if I want to go to a haunted house with her friday night. I told her I will have to ask my mom but, I would love to. When school is over I say
“ Mom Bethanie asked me if I wanted to go to a haunted house with her tomorrow night.”
“ Sure you can go!” She says not even letting me finish my sentence.
“ Okay thanks mom!” I say with joy
The next day when I get to school I tell Bethanie that I can go to the haunted house with her. When friday finally comes we take the bus home to her house. When we get there I just stare at her house. I never knew her house was this big. She has an in ground swimming pool, so yesterday she told me I needed to bring my swim suit. We are going to go swimming before we go to the haunted house. We jump in a few times off the diving board doing flips and all kinds of tricks. After we are done off the diving board we swim and all of a sudden we hear a phone ringing when we are swimming, and it’s her mom, she says to get dressed then come to the front of their house. When we get out there she is in her car and we are on our way to the haunted house. While waiting in line we see clowns everywhere which are my biggest fear.I see this guy with weird hair and I know he wants to scare me but I try not to look at him and then all of a sudden he goes right in Bethanies face and she screams really loud. I started laughing and he came over to me and stared, then walked away limping.Walking into the haunted house I see holes in the walls and lights are flickering and then someone pops out and smoke starts coming out. I can feel people staring and me and ready to come out and jump at me. All of a sudden it turns pitch black and I just stop where I am I can feel spider webs all around me and it feels like the walls are closing in on my. All of a sudden I hear someone jump out and purple lights flicker and I see it is a clown with a squeaky thing and he squeaks it in my face. We walk into a room with a lot of mirrors and all of a sudden a mirror has “ I will get you” written on it and then disappears. After I see that I hear the floor creaking and it is not Bethanie or I because we are not moving and then a door creaking. I think to myself this is fake this is fake and then we are on this thing that moves us and we do not have to walk. Then the haunted house is over it took us outside. For the first time going into a haunted house I was scared but it was really fun. I know for sure that Bethanie and I will be sleeping with the lights on.
