Bullies
Ally sat in the back seat of her mother’s Honda digging her nails into the leather stitches of the seat , angry to be sitting there thanks to her sister, Hannah. On the contrary, outside was perfectly sunny and birds were chirping. Is the day purposefully mocking me? Ally thought.
“ Hannah,” Ally’s mother said stiffly, calling her twin’s name. “ Let’s make this year a fresh start.”
“Mom, why do I need a fresh start, what have I done wrong?”Ally could hear from the front seat. Ally sighed out loud.
“ Mom! Why do I have to be here it isn’t my fault that she-,” Ally sat up, glaring at Hannah, “ is a bully, and stole Rosie’s diary and read to the whole school during lunch. She is the one who got expelled from school! I was a respectful student with straight A’s! Why do I need a “fresh start”. This is so unfair!” Ally complained.
“ Hey!” Hannah complained, “ You don’t need to be mean or rub it in my face. Besides Rosie was such a snitch. Last year in my class, she told on me every time I didn’t do my homework, and laughed at me. And there’s stuff happening to me too, I just don’t bother telling anyone .” Hannah argued, whispering the last part so that no one besides her could hear it.
Ally carefully got out of the car, closing the door gingerly while Hannah barged out of the car, slamming the door and stomping her way toward the back trunk. Wow we really are different, Ally thought to herself. I mean sure, we’re twins but we don’t look alike at all and our personalities are totally different. Hannah’s hair has purple streaks in her brown hair and my hair is just strawberry blonde. We don’t even do anything together.
Hannah went to the trunk and tenderly took out her own backpack while she hatefully knocked Ally’s new P.E. bag on the ground and bitterly stepped on it. Ally glared at Hannah and buried her lunch box in the trunk so it would be harder for Hannah to find it.
When Ally came home that day she immediately started on her homework. “ Hey where’d Hannah go?” Ally asked her mom.
“ She went to her International Crepe Making Society meeting, remember?” her mom answered.
“I’m going to use her computer for homework, okay? I forgot to charge mine last night and it’ll take a long time to boot up.” Ally said turning to go.
Ally opened up Hannah’s computer gently. Immediately her emails popped up. “ Oh Hannah,” Ally said quietly to herself. “ Always forgetting to logout.” Ally shifted her mouse to logout when suddenly another email popped up. Ally read it out loud to herself, “ Hannah look at this sweet picture of you that I took. Oh, by the way I posted this lovely picture on Instagram.” Underneath was horrid picture of Hannah with her face stuffed with two hot dogs with the caption: Stuffing your face, no wonder you’re fat!! Ally inhaled sharply, completely forgetting about her homework. She scrolled down to see who had sent this awful email. She looked at the top of the email to check the sender and saw that it read, “THE PINK AND GOLD 3.” Ally swiftly typed back “Stop bothering her.”
The next day after school Ally went straight to Hannah’s computer knowing Hannah was at vocal school. She typed in ‘THE PINK AND GOLD 3’ in the search bar. Ally clicked on a blog that had been written by them.
As she scrolled through the list of repulsive things that they had posted. Maybe this is why Hannah has been so secretive lately. Ally thought, as Hannah barged into the room.
“Hey,” Hannah demanded, “what’re you doing in my room? Why do you have my computer.”
“Research,” Ally replied looking to see if she had exited out of the page. She had. Ally scurried upstairs to her room.
Hmm... Hannah thought why didn’t she just use her own computer? Had I logged out of all my apps? Hannah scrolled through the history and saw that someone had visited her email. “ Ahhhhh!” Hannah yelled out loud. “ No. No. No.” She continued to yell as she climbed up the stairs to Ally’s room.
Hannah barged into Ally’s room banging the door against the wall. “ Ally,” she yelled, “ why, why, why!”
Unfortunately Ally knew exactly what Hannah was talking about. “ I’m sorry,” Ally said cringing as the words came out of her mouth. “ Pink and gold 3, huh?” Ally asked.
“ Yeah,” Hannah said, making a sour face. “ Oh well now that you know we may as well work together to see who it is.” Hannah walked timidly to Ally’s bed. She sat down next to her sister and grabbed a fluffy, blue pillow from her bed.
“ Hann,” Ally whispered calling her sister by her nickname. “ How long have they been bothering you?”
Hannah sighed out loud and started pulling at the pillow’s ruffles. “Since the beginning of fifth grade. Before Rosie or anyone else I started bullying.”
“ Hannah.” Ally whispered starting to her eyes starting to tear. “ Why didn’t you tell me. Why didn’t you tell Mom or Dad. Why didn’t you tell anyone!”
“ I …...I …….I didn’t think that anyone really cared.” Hannah managed to stammer.
“Okay let’s try to find out who those three are,” Ally said, opening up her computer.
“Oh hey! You have a new email.” Hannah took the mouse from Ally and clicked it.
“Oh no.” Ally exclaimed. “ It’s from the PINK AND GOLD THREE.” It says: “ You think you are so perfect. Wait until we’re finished with you. Signed Maya, Erin, and Veronica.”
“ Why would they be bullying you?” Hannah asked.
“ They must have learned that I was trying to protect you and find out who they are,” Ally replied.
“ Wait,” Hannah said, “ Those names sound familiar. They’re all in the cheer club. In seventh grade I think.”
“ Wait. You mean at our school. Then how did they know you before we moved?” Ally uttered.
“ Come on Ally! Everyone knew me as the girl who could sing any Taylor Swift tune last year. My email was totally exposed! Because I was so famous they started bullying me.”
“ And everyone knew me as the expert dancer that danced to all your tunes. Only I didn’t get as much fame as you did,” Ally implied getting a bitter taste in her mouth, something that wasn’t really familiar to her: jealousy.
Ally and Hannah slept in their respective rooms that night. Hannah’s right Ally thought. The 3 probably just wanted to steal her ‘fame’. Ally calmed herself down, getting rid of any envious thoughts she previously had.
Why would they terrorize Al? Hannah thought to herself. I put my twin in danger. Don’t worry it’ll all be over soon. Hopefully…. Hannah felt a sense of protection- something that was new to her and had a sweet taste in her mouth.
The next day Hannah woke Ally up in time for school. “ Girls, don’t forget your lunch.” their mom said.
“ I got it!” Hannah said, picking up two brown bags. That was not something she would have originally done. If Ally and Hannah hadn’t been working together Hannah wouldn’t have offered to do something like that. Even without turning around she knew her mom was raising her eyebrows. In fact, she could practically hear her mom and dad’s silent conversation with their eyes.
“ Bye mom! Bye Dad ,” Ally yelled as she leaped through the door.
“ Come on!” Hannah shouted, “ the school bus is about to leave!”
Ally went through all her classes with pleasure. In math it was fun algebraic equations. P.E. had a one mile run. Language Arts was narrative writing. At last lunch came.
Lunch! Ally thought. Ally ran to the comforting brown benches that had probably been at this school longer than she had been alive. She slowly sat down putting a napkin down so her lunch wouldn’t touch the ground.
When her friends Nicole and Chloe showed up with Hannah they all sat down in a circle including her. Ally and Hannah knew that most twins didn’t stay with each other, but they both had the same set of friends so they stayed together. All the girls talked to each other and ate their lunches. The day went on. Though nothing particular exciting had happened.
The next day had an uneasy feeling to it. Everyone felt it; or at least anyone who had enough time and paid attention to all those little details like Ally and Hannah. Both Ally and Hannah went about their days without any arguments. After school both Ally and Hannah met up so they could walk together after school. “ Hannah,” Ally said once they met up, “ I just need to get my violin okay? You can wait for me by the trash cans near the back exit.”
When Ally walked into the orchestra she saw the teacher, Mr. Turner, packing all his papers. “ Hi Mr. Turner! I just want to grab my violin,” Ally said enthusiastically.
“ Go ahead Ally,” Mr.Turner said. Mr. Turner was Ally’s favorite teacher. He always let her demonstrate to the class and didn’t ever yell at anyone.
Ally grabbed her violin and headed out. “ Bye!” she called as she stepped out of the door. Ally leisurely walked toward the trash cans where Hannah was supposed to be waiting for her.
But as Ally turned the corner she heard voices that weren’t Hannah, or Nicole, or Chloe. Who are those people? They sound like they’re yelling! Ally thought.
“ You and your flawless little sister. Always getting straight A’s. Good at everything! We can’t have you trying to ruin our reputation at school now?” a voice yelled maliciously. Ally ran to where Hannah was and could see three girls standing wickedly over them.
“ Who… who… who are you and what do you want with us?” Hannah’s brave voice quavered. Ally looked admirably at her ‘older’ sister knowing that she would always be there for her.
“ Why we are the PINK AND GOLD THREE And we are here to make your lives horrible, you little brats.”
Ally and Hannah heard footsteps coming their way. Unfortunately so did Erin, Maya, and Veronica. The three girls ran away leaving Ally and Hannah behind to pick up all the papers they had dropped. Mr. Turner turned the corner and saw Ally and Hannah picking up their things and leaving. “ Bye girls.” he said. Ally and Hannah simply nodded to him and made their way down the beautiful hill that they lived on.
Though on the outside the girls looked completely fine they were extremely battered on the inside. I have a feeling that today won’t be the last time they bother us. What if they never stop? I’m so glad that Ally came by soon enough or else I would've probably cried which I know from certain experiences is just showing a sign of weakness. Hannah thought to herself.
“ Hannah,” Ally whispered, “ Thanks for being so brave when those girls were bullying us. I would’ve never been able to even speak up.”
“ I … I was about to cry before you came,” Hannah replied. “ I wasn’t being brave all!”
“ I never really realized how much damage bullying could really do. I guess no one does until it happens to them.” Ally said knowledgeably.
“ I’m sorry,” Hannah whispered. “ For making you move here and then getting you a first-class ticket to a bully.”
Next week something peculiar happened. Of course the PINK AND GOLD THREE were still harassing them but Honey and Hannah had managed to stand together, something they had never done before and encourage each other to keep going to school.
During break that day the clique Maya, Erin, and Veronica came up to Hannah, Ally, Chloe, and Nicole. All they said was, “after school you two. And don’t even try escaping it! our little meeting place.” Erin shoved Hannah so she fell over and Veronica tripped Ally so her clothes got soaked and Maya pushed Nicole and Chloe apart so she could walk through them.
“ Okay. Who are those lovely ladies,” Chloe demanded.
“ Yeah, they’re totally bullying you guys.” Nicole chimed.
Ally sighed and said, “ that’s exactly what they are. A group of bullies.” Hannah solemnly nodded along.
The school day went by as it normally would. With the academic subjects endlessly droning on and the electives being so short. Ally and Hannah met up after school as they always did.
“Um...Let’s go get my violin,” Ally said nervously looking around. The orchestra room was completely silent. The silence was like water with nobody or nothing inside it. When Ally spoke the first words she broke the silence like ripples breaking the perfect surface of stillness. “ HANNAH! HANNAH! HANNAH!” Ally yelled. “ I have a plan!” Ally yelled once more as she whispered it into Hannah’s ear. Ally bounded toward Mr. Turner and had a serious conversation with him as she confided everything that had happened to her in the past two months.
“ C’mon Ally,” Hannah cried out, “ We are going to be late.”
Ally and Hannah rushed toward the trash cans where they knew PINK AND GOLD 3 were waiting. This plan of Ally’s better not fail Hannah thought to herself.
“ Well, little insects,” Maya said.
“ Oh cut to the chase Maya!” Veronica yelled. “ We want you to stop being the ideal singing and dancing pair. I mean give someone prettier a chance to be quintessential.”
“ Yeah! You guys are nothing but a bunch of jerks with a tiny bit of talent.” Erin viciously spat out the words shoving a trash can down near them to intimidate them. Maya and Veronica both shoved two more trash cans near them. Ally cleared the the trash can that was coming toward her. Hannah, not as fortunate got hit by the trash can but didn’t seem to be hurt.
As Ally and Hannah clung to each other they noticed something that the girls had failed to notice.
Mr. Turner was silently making his way down the hall the clang of trash cans, looking enraged.
“ We won’t ever stop doing what we love! Will we Ally?” Hannah screamed. Ally, paralyzed with fear could merely nod her head.
“ Neither should you!” Mr. Turner said making his grand entrance. “ Maya what has become of you? You used to be my best cello player. Erin was the choir leader. Veronica, you used to always come to me for bassoon advice.”
“ M..M...Mr...Mr...Mr. Turner,” Erin stuttered out. All Mr. Turner could do was nod in shame of seeing what looked like his previous students.
“ I know what you girls have been doing,” Mr. T whispered as quietly as he could, but still, everyone in that area heard him. “ You just did music for the attention, not because you are truly in love with it, as Ally and Hannah are.”
“ Girls come with me,” Mr. Turner said. Somehow all of them knew he was only talking about the clique but Ally and Hannah still followed.
“ Bullying is not something that should be taken lightly,” Mr. Turner scolded. “ I’m sure all of you know that.” He stared deep into every one of their eyes, daring them to speak. Maya, Erin, and Veronica turned their heads toward the floor, finally realizing what exactly they had done wrong. To Hannah’s surprise though Ally too looked ashamed. Wait why is Al so penitent? Hannah questioned herself. How has Ally ‘perfect girl’ ever inflicted pain? Maybe there is more to what meets the eye with Ally.
“ Maya! Erin! Veronica!” Mr. Turner barked, probably for the first time in his life, jogging their thoughts. “ After a lot, and I mean a lot of careful consideration I think we need to have a long talk.”
“Mr. Donatelli have watched your behavior even before you started bothering Ally and Hannah.” Mr. Turner continued.
“ We’ll just leave now,” Hannah spoke up realizing that this should’ve been a private moment.
Hannah and Ally turned to go to the front of the office where the blue plush chairs were primly seated in a row. Ally went directly to the chair and slumped in her seat not wanting to talk to anybody. Ally looked up from her seat watching Hannah ask the nurse for a band aid. Why does Hannah need a band aid? Ally thought to herself. Oh she must have scratched her hand when the trash can came down near her.
When Hannah came back to Ally to put the band aid on Ally asked , “ Did you just scratch it?”
Hannah showed Ally what happened. As Ally looked over her shoulder to see her hand which had a very deep gash with blood running down her hand. “ Oh my gosh!” Ally yelled making heads turn. “ WE have to clean it up.” Ally grabbed Hannah’s good wrist and raced to the bathroom. Ally, who wanted to be doctor when she grew up, plucked a paper towel and carefully wet it. Ally gently dabbed Hannah’s wound and put a band aid over it.
“ I just had to get hit by the sharp side didn’t I,” Hannah said with a flat tone, rolling her eyes, “Although, thanks for the help, Ally
“No problem, but just take care of it now,” Ally said with a worried look on her face. The girls got out of the bathroom, and began to walk. They turned the corner to Seven-Eleven which was on the way to their house. Hannah greedily eyed the store feeling a rumble in her stomach. “Hey, after all that I’m starving! Want to buy something?” Hannah asked. Ally agreed, nodding her head.
As they crossed the street to go to the gas station Ally heard voices. “ If you don’t give me your lunch money for the rest of the year. I swear, I’ll lock you in the custodian's room.” A threatening voice whispered.
“ A… I… I..,” they heard a young voice stammered. It seemed as though the young girl was crying.
“ Do you hear that?” Hannah and Ally asked each other at the exact same time.
“ Come on!” Hannah whispered following the voices.
“ Hey!” Ally screamed taking charge for the first time ever. “ Leave her alone!” Ally continued pointing to the young girl Hannah was comforting.
“ Or what?” The bully questioned.
“Or we’ll report you,” Ally answered back calmly, holding up her phone. The bully wimpily slinked away.
“ Where do you live?” Hannah asked the girl whose name seemed to be Amber.
“ Oh! Thank you, but I can walk home myself,” Amber said as the girl turned to leave. “Thank you for standing up to that awful meanie for me.”
“No problem,” Ally said seriously. “Bullying is a serious problem. If you or anyone you know is getting bullied you should tell a teacher or parent, okay?”
“Okay!” Amber replied cheerfully, picking up her backpack.
On the way home Ally and Hannah had a conversation. “I… I can’t believe you stood up to that bully.” Hannah implied, feeling impressed.
“I guess I know how bad bullying really is now,” Ally said, sharing a knowing smile with Hannah.
“I guess we do,” Hannah commented. Ally put her arm around her sister and they trudged up the beautiful hill toward their house.
