As I lay here, on this warm summer night, I think of you. I think of how we used to stay up till 3 in the morning, texting. I think of how that day we spent together was a true Indian summer day, how the sun seemed fitting for June, not September. I think of how your car smelled the mixture of your musky cologne, old sweaty band socks, and you cranky heater begrudgingly turning on. I think of your wisdom shared. You were a whole two years older than me, but I thought you knew everything.

You knew a lot. I’ll give you that.

You knew about conducting. Of course you would. You’re the drum major. You knew about freshman Biology, because you were taking Bio II AP. You knew how to make me feel special. How to make me feel like I was the number one person in your life. You knew how to charm my mother. You knew she loved you.

You also knew how to break a heart.
