Was it Because of Me?
Don't let his thoughts break yours
Into tiny shards of glass
Like the vase he threw across the room
That left that ugly slash
Because you are a human
You have your own mind
So use it to form opinions
And freedom you will find
Don't just agree with every word he speaks
Look instead upon your face in a hand-held mirror
And ask yourself why is there a constant path marked by tears
Seconds, minutes, days and weeks
His hands will haunt your dreams
But within your pained and fitful sleep
Take time to realize how sun on water gleams
For in those dancing specks of light is wisdom past your years
Of how to let the past go and eventually face your fears
Don't hold that silver piece of evil and wonder why you're here
Because of his belittling face and ungrateful sneer
Just listen to me and ponder these words that I speak to you
And when you taste that salt dribble past your nose
Ache for the minerals of ocean swells and poetry, not prose
Because in both these lines and the foaming sea
May you find the peace and joy
That helps you forget every "was it because of me"?
