I am disgusted by the “Jim Crow” laws. In fact, just as horrifying as the meaning behind the laws is the fact that they were in effect until the 1960s, less than fifty years ago—in my parents’ life time. I think, oftentimes, we think of racsism and segregation as a thing of the past. In truth, it is still very close to home. The segregation laws were enforced in the majority of states only fifty years ago. In my opinion, that is not very long ago at all. Even worse, there is still significant racism today. Many people, even those who claim that the color of one’s skin doesn’t matter to them, still notice it. It makes me wonder what ever happened to that historic phrase, “All men are created equal.”
