LGBT rights are my passion. Not only because I identify with the community, but also because I have many friends and family members who also are a part of the community.  It’s a screwed up world for people like me.

The mainstream media is centered on the straight community. Just think about it. Most couples in TV shows are straight, the people they are dealing with are almost all straight. Yet, when there is a homosexual couple in a TV show, the straight community will throw a hissy fit… literally. If the people of my community have to put up with heterosexual media almost all of the time, the heterosexual community can put up with media with homosexuals. Why is that so hard? My community is suffering.

We are suffering in many ways. Yes, the United States just passed that homosexual marriage is legal, everywhere. That is absolutely amazing. Yes, I am proud of my country in that aspect. But what now? Just because we can get married doesn’t mean life is a piece of cake for us anymore. We still are persecuted, taunted, and sometimes outright abused. We can now get married, but what about our youth? In bigoted schools, with only heterosexual sex education, with vocally abusive teachers, and students, even physically abusive at times. What about the murders of our trans brothers and sisters? What about the work situation of our non-binary family? This is only scratching the surface. There is so much more that isn’t equal. Our country screams freedom and equality, but yet we are one of the countries farthest away from it

It’s not just our community that is persecuted. It is everybody. We simply cannot get along. We are all talk, and no action. All we do is talk about equality and freedom but rarely anything ever happens. It took years, decades even for us to just be able to get married. It took years, even decades for racial equality in our country, but we still don’t have that. Just like the LGBT community does not have equality. Will our country ever be able to get over themselves? Yes, we are Americans. We are proud of our country. But does our country deserve our pride at this point? We are a bigoted, racist, and sexist country, and we are doing very little to change it.

I love my country, but sometimes it makes me sick to know the persecution that everyone that isn’t a heterosexual white male goes through, and it is up to our generation to change that.
