You Can't Do That!
Today I was told I couldn’t do something because I’m a girl.
More than once.
No matter how many times I think I’ve proven myself, they say it again:
“You can’t do that! you’re a girl”
They told me that it was a joke and I should get over it, but I can’t.
On the bus, I was told I shouldn’t be in advanced classes because I’m a girl.
During theatre, someone I thought I could trust told me I couldn’t help out because I’m a girl.
“You can’t do that! You’re a girl!”
So what?
I would never tell a guy he can’t take home ec because he’s a boy.
However, when I took shop, I was told:
“You can’t do that! You’re a girl!”
You can’t tell me it was a joke anymore.
There’s enough sexism in the world today, you don’t need to contribute to it.
So guys, if you hear someone say
“You can’t do that! You’re a girl!”
Please tell him to stop.
And girls, if someone says to you
“You can’t do that! You’re a girl!”
Tell them to stop.
To everyone:
I know you can’t make the hurt go away, but if you can make someone see their joke does hurt,
You can at least say you tried.
