Spelling Should Be Taught Well In School

By James

In my school, there is a camp called FCA (Fellowship Of Christian Athletes) and one day I got called on by the teacher to write down words on the whiteboard as the teacher says them, but knowing me I have terrible handwriting and terrible spelling. When I got up to write I was nervous because if I spelt a word wrong I would have been made fun of, and that's exactly what happened after I spelt shipwreck, shipreck. I think that schools should teach spelling better and not just briefly go over it in 3rd grade. I'm going to tell the reader why I think they should teach better spelling in school and the benefits of being able to spell, like how it can help on tests or homework, so it can help study and take notes, so it can help save time and so it can be less embarrassing writing in front of other people.

My first point is how spelling can help on a test or doing homework. There is always that one test in English that grades spelling and I did terribly on it. I have had bad handwriting and bad spelling for homework, because I had to get it done fast, and I got a bad grade because the teacher can't read it, but it's not my fault I can't spell. These things can really affect my grade and that's why I think spelling should be taught better, next.

My second point is so I can read what I write. Some tests let me use my notebook to help me, but it doesn't help when I can't read it because my spelling is so bad. There's no point in studying and writing stuff down in my notebook if I can't even read it. If me and my friends are working on a project together, it doesn't help when I can't read what he wrote down to help me on the project. That's why I think that spelling can really help me with a lot of things, especially when it comes to taking notes, next.

My third point is how spelling can help me save time. Sometimes when I spell a word wrong then my word automatically auto corrects, but sometimes when I have no clue how to spell something then it doesn't even auto correct and I sit there for a while trying to figure out how to spell something. Especially when I'm doing a word cross puzzle assignment because then I need to spell it correctly or else I will get it wrong and it might take me a while to figure out how to spell those words. That is why I think spelling can help save time, now onto my final point.

My fourth and final point is that sometimes bad spelling can be embarrassing. If I can't spell well I could be made fun of like the experience I had in FCA and that's not very good for my self-esteem. Just imagine having to write down a word that you don't know how to spell in front of a whole classroom. That's why I think that bad spelling can be really embarrassing.

That's why I think spelling can help me on tests, so I can read what I write, so I can save some time and so it's not embarrassing. That is why spelling should be taught well and not briefly gone over in third grade. The Reading School article on why is spelling important said in 2021 “90% of English words follow spelling rules and patterns, so learning spelling and phonics rules isn’t just empowering, it’s efficient.” The experience that I had in FCA was terrible and I hope that you will never have to go through that, but if you're bad at spelling like me you probably have.
