Should school start at 10?

Some people have suggested that students would do better in school if school started at 10:00 a.m. Personally I think that having school start at 10:00 is not a good idea. There are many down falls to starting school that late. Would you rather get home from school at 2:15 or 5:15? Starting school that late would be a hardship for athletes and students participating in other extra- curricular activities. Practices usually last 2 ½ to 3 hours. By the time students get home from practice it would be 8:30 or 9:00 and they still need to eat dinner and do homework. This does not leave enough time for homework. The student’s grades will suffer.
Students with after school jobs will suffer. They may not get hired or may get fired from their job because they are limited in the hours they can work. They will also have less time to do their homework.
Some people have other commitments after school such as lessons, religious activities, family activities, etc. Getting out of school this late would prevent them from participating in these activities. It would also hurt their social life.
Students also need some time to relax after school. They need a break from school work before starting homework.
Most teenagers probably don’t get enough sleep and starting school this late would make it even harder to get enough sleep. Sleep is important so you can be alert the next day.

Teachers and coaches would getting out of school at an even later time since they are required to stay for at least a half hour after school. This would make them get home even later, especially those who stay at the school and help students that are struggling and/ or having to grade and correct papers homework and tests. Most teachers want to get home to their families and spend time with them. Some may have other commitments in the evenings.
As a student I would rather have school start at 7:45 a.m. instead of 10:00 a.m. because that way I can get home at a decent time and also have time to do sports and other things every normal teen likes to do after school. I would rather do all my homework when I get home in the afternoon than having to do it later in the evening when I am usually tired and can’t think straight.
