"When they come to ethnically clense me, will you speak up, will you defend me?" --Pop Will Eat Itself

We work in florescent office buildings,
Spit curses at the homeless,
Gain weight,
And raid McDonalds like it’s the end of the world.
We sit in dark living rooms,
Glued to a box that spits out lies and expectations,
Eat food off of foam containers,
And wear out our thumbs on game controllers.

I am the American.
I pledge allegiance to a god which I don’t believe
A rule I cannot follow
And a country I stopped respecting long ago.
I am the American.
I watch our news,
Eat the food of the nation
And send my kids off to war.
I am the American.

Our children go to school to learn things
They will not need,
Like of people long dead,
And teachers order them
To write until fingers bruise.
They play on metal trees,
Run on concrete playgrounds,
Skin their knees on gymnasium floors,
Using Barbies and lead blocks to teach them how the world works.

I am the American.
I pledge allegiance to a god which I don’t believe,
A rule I cannot follow,
And a country I stopped respecting long ago.
I am the American.
I watch our news,
Eat the food of the nation,
And send my kids off to war.
I am the American.

I pledge allegiance to the flag,
Of the United Stated of America,
And to the republic,
For which it stands,
One nation, full of lies,
Divided,
With shackles and inequities for all.
You’re watching the bright box full of lies,
Promising the new weight loss exercise,
Will cancel out your last burger and fries.

I am the American.
I pledge allegiance to a god which I don’t believe,
A rule I cannot follow,
And a country I stopped respecting long ago.
I am the American.
I watch our news,
Eat the food of the nation,
And send my kids off to war.
I am the American.

You’re the American,
Headed off to your job in the office,
Another day at the bank,
Or in the blistering heat of a construction site
In mid-summer
When the sweat settles around the fat rolls in your belly
And gives you a rash
And all you can think of is how you crave another energy drink,
Or a Big Mac and a soda.

I am the American.
I pledge allegiance to a god which I don’t believe,
A rule I cannot follow,
And a country I stopped respecting long ago.
I am the American.
I watch our news,
Eat the food of the nation,
And send my kids off to war.
I am the American.
I don’t practice what I preach to foreign countries.
I voted for Bush and swore that I didn’t.
I support a divided nation.
I am the American.
