Because peer pressure, or just the natural desire to be understood and liked, too many of us squash down and hide the characteristics that make us a planet full of individuals, each a perfect, original design by the Master Artist, instead of ranks of indentically-turned-out robots, programmed to behave a certain way and have all the right likes and interests. We take what we've been told is the perfect, best way to be, and try to mold ourselves into that.
