What Lies Beneath?

What lies beneath
the optimism
and the smiles
that are only there
when I'm around who I care about?
What lies beneath
the darkness
that only exists
to those who are nothing?
What lies beneath
who I am
when the other parts of me
aren't there?
Who am I?
What lies beneath
everything?
Beneath the part of me
that I don't even recognize
or acknowledge?
Which part of me
is the truth?
Which part of me
will remain
when adolesence is gone?
