Show them who, what, when, where, and how. But most importantly, show them WHY, because every great story has a WHY.

I stand tall in the darkest nights,

Keeping careful watch with steady light.

Summer and winter, rain or shine

You can find me here at any time.

During the day, I am hardly seen,

But after dark, they stand beneath me

Calling for someone to come and find them

So they can leave the blackness far behind them.

When morning comes, I shut my eyes

Because the light is back in the sky.

I'll be ready when night comes again

With light to guide you home again.

The author's comments:

This is a poem about a lamppost.  The backstory:   I was on the bus, talking to a friend, and looked out the window. At the time, we were talking about writing.  I said to my friend, "I'm going to write a poem about THAT lamppost."  So I did.
