Too Late
My calendar says it's time to forget you,
But in my heart, it's still May, three years past.
You haven't thought of me since then,
And you never cross my mind.
Because how can you cross something you never left?
For someone who wears their kindness proudly,
How could I have hurt you so badly?
You are the tearstain on my record, blurring the ink of my judgement.
It's too late to apologize
The word 'wild', kiwis, cowboys, and theater gays,
Braces, blondes, brie, and sandwich bread,
spur on the two-syllable chant of your name.
You echo throughout me, never quite gone,
sending the ache of regret through my veins.
Funny posts send me scrolling for your name,
before I realize I unfollowed you.
I know, but my fingers still forget.
It's too late to apologize
The only thing I can do is close my eyes
And dream of a day when we finally speak again
Sometimes this is when I graduate,
Or maybe I find you when we're forty-something
But you always give me the same hug you used to.
And I can finally say that one word, five letters.
The balloon pops as I recall, tears falling into my pillow,
It's too late to apologize.

This is a poem about regret and loss, using the 'refrain' poetry structure, and a lyric from the song 'Apologize' by Timbaland.
