Freshman Love?
You totally fell for it.
Freshman love? Really?
Three months of a false you
running around with a false him,
thinking that you were in love.
Tell me then,
how could it have been real love
when neither of you were real?
Why was it so clear to everybody,
except, it seems, to you,
that there was nothing true or honest
to get you past your initial attractions?
He was too worried about pleasing you,
and you were too worried about pleasing him
because you were scared to death of what you would do
if he dumped you.
You’re angry now,
angry that he could just
“stop loving you.”
You’re angry because you convinced yourself
that you had been totally accepted
for who you really were.
But you don’t have the right
to be angry with him
because he was transparent.
Had you looked, thought reasonably,
had some self-respect and self-confidence
you would have seen he’s not as special as you think.
And you don’t have the right
to be angry with him
for not loving you the way you are,
because he never had the chance.
