It all began in 1997
An eleven year battle with malignant cancer
It was always gnawing at his strength
The metastatic melanoma slowly stole his breath
Cycling helped him through it all, each and every time
Surgeries, treatments, and many close calls; he lived through it all
This unfairness left all speechless but his courage pressed on
The cancer seemed to smile wickedly as it stole his life

The battle continued one side gaining then the other

He always surpassed the doctors’ expectations

Always braver than us all

He always helped others and never gave up, even when that seemed the only answer

To the Lance Armstrong Foundation donated dollars now go

The cancer slowly crept ahead, growing stronger on the way

I now would like to honor him and his worthy fight

His fight was sadly lost in the summer of ‘08

The devilish disease got its wish

He is now gone but his spirit will live forever

I wrote this piece as an awe poem for an school English project and didn't even think about what I was writing I just wrote it...It was like when your painting or drawing and not really making it something specific, but then you look up and a masterpiece is staring back at you.
