To Laura
You are the tall standing tree
that gives the forest life.
The tree that protects
and oversees the world around.
The one that reaches up towards the clouds
and stretches out wide
with your welcoming arms.
You are the tree that the kids run to in the summertime
as they search for shade and refuge.
Your peaceful nature allows them to relax
within your realm,
or carve their initials into your skin,
creating a tattoo that you wear proudly.
You provide the branches that allow them to swing,
and you show no anger when they pluck
the leaves from your body
because they long to have a unique piece of you
in their possession.
You are the tree that glistens in the winter
when a thin covering of snow conceals your barren branches.
The tree that the night owl perches upon
and where the blue jay builds its nest.
And even in the midst of winter,
your warmth can still be felt from within.
You are the tree that gains strength
from your roots planted deep within Mother Nature.
The tree that supplies the branches for a small campfire
alongside the lake,
producing an ambience of sweet, smokey air
that surrounds your home.
You provide the blossoming flowers that get tucked behind the ear,
and the fruit needed for jam.
When these pieces depart from your body,
you take no harm
because your life is rooted in giving to others.
And that is what makes you beautiful.
