Beauty
Basic desires I want to fulfill,
Earthy dark brown eyes are what give me the thrill.
Absence of compliments is what makes me sad,
Unless I’m blessed with what I’ve never had.
Tomorrow is another day of insecurities and dread,
Yesterday was another day of feeling overfed.
I want to change,
So I don’t look so strange.
Plump lips,
Anemic hips.
I am beautiful.
Now am I suitable?

I wrote this piece as a criticism of unrealistic beauty standards that are often pushed--through social media--onto young teens. This poem is a representation of the emotions and thoughts I dealt with in middle school.
