things i learned at the baby pool
a comprehensive list of the things i learned at the baby pool:
-mom’s arms are safe
-plug your nose when you go underwater
-sharing toys leads to making friends
-don’t run, the lifeguard will yell at you
-going down the baby slide backwards is a bad idea
-if you smile at the lifeguards, they will smile back
-kids change a lot over thirteen years
-baby pools do not
-the baby pool is empty most of the time
-walking in circles makes the shift go by faster
-lifeguarding is boring
-i don’t fare well alone with my thoughts
-kids don’t have to think
-kids are really weird
-kids make friends a lot faster than teenagers
-kids like to run
-kids don’t listen to lifeguards
-kids fall on their faces when they don’t listen to lifeguards
-then they get right back up
-happy memories are important
-kids graduate from the baby pool fast
-kids grow up fast
-dancing in the empty baby pool is ok
-16 is not too old to go down the baby slide
-kids like smiling
-always smile back

I grew up going to the public pool in my area, and then I lifeguarded at the same pool as a teenager. You learn a lot of things from observing people for 7 hours a day.
