"A smooth sea never made a skilled sailor" - Franklin D Roosevelt

I close my eyes

To see a hidden world laid out in front of me

Consisting of hundreds of thousands of stars, planets, galaxies

Filled with places I could never imagine

In these worlds,

There lay millions of secrets

What a wonder it would be to behold the secrets of the universe

Or would it be a burden?

As I travel through this newfound place,

Nebulas, comets, and meteors come into view

I look around in utmost admiration and awe

As a whole new world stares back at me

Suddenly, in the blink of an eye,

One world is destroyed

Flames and bright lights set the dark space ablaze

As it terminates the history, lives, and secrets of a planet

But in the distance

A new world forms simply from a ball of rock

It develops and grows to become a place of greenery and flourishment

As if a planet had not just exploded moments ago

A world gained is indeed a world lost

A place thriving with life and civilization,

Gone in an instant,

Only to be replaced by another small world in this vast universe

Does life truly end as quickly as it is created?

Is this the sad reality of the circle of life?

Do stars shine so bright with the knowledge that they will be destroyed one day?

Who are we, then, in this universe?

We are truly nothing,

Except for the pawns of the universe

Because the universe holds the key to life in our small, insignificant world

We shine brightly, knowing that one day, we are to explode like stars

I open my eyes,

Only to be hit with the reality of my existence within this small, insignificant world

Like everything in this universe, I was born with a date to die

So why not make every day memorable and worth the trouble to survive?

Vivamus moriendum est.

Let us live, for we must die.

Let us make each moment special

And shine like the stars that make up this galaxy

The author's comments:

"Vivamus moriendum est" is a beautiful, underappreciated Latin quote that translates to "let us live for we must die." It seems that we have forgotten to do that in today's modern world. Life passes quickly from school to work to building a family as we are carried away in these events. We cannot live our life at the moment to its fullest as we prepare for the next stage of it. In reality, we should cherish every moment of what we have been given! At the same time, we should leave a lasting mark and influence on the world. Out of a population of 8 billion people, very few are remembered for who they are. It is their legacy that we cherish and remember to this date. Compared to the vastness of this universe, however, 8 billion is nothing. Therefore, I would like the audience to take away from this poem the insignificance of our lives and small realities, yet how we should make a mark in society before we leave. Like the stars in our universe, we should glow even though we know our end. But just like only the brightest stars are known, we should shine brightly in our world. For, after all, we are the stars of our planet.
