Breathe
The party is over
You and I are the last to be leaving
We’re sitting on separate sides of the room
It’s dead quiet.
The only sound is our breathing.
I take a glance at you
You head is bowed and I can’t see your face
I tap my foot anxiously.
I’m leaving before you
I know what you’re thinking
And I wish you’d make your move
I’m still watching you
Your head raises
Your blue eyes find my emerald ones
I take in a breath and hold it
You start to get up, walking to me
I hear the sound of a car horn and glance out the window.
I shot you a cold look
And walked out the door.
I exhaled sharply.
And realized,
I’d forgotten to breathe.
