Now is the time to shut your eyes,
For nothing left, to you, seems sane,
In this world that you despise.

You plop into a deserted compartment, shy,
As you avoid all people in the 6:30 train.
You should look away and shut your eyes.

But you see a woman and her soldier embrace and cry,
As you hover over the window, craned.
They aren’t, but you’re hidden from the world you despise.

You watch others say their final goodbyes.
And although trying to sleep might be in vain,
You say, “Now is the time to shut my eyes”.

But the woman’s face won’t leave your brain.
The sadness written on it reflects your pain.
It strangely discomforting to know you aren’t alone in this world you despise.

The train begins to fall and rise.
The sorrowful whistle sounds its refrain.
Now is the time to shut your eyes,
For there is reason for you, this world, to despise.

This is a villanelle (except for one bend of the "rules") written in a time where I was actually very happy place. It was inspired by an actual event that I witnessed at the airport with a husband who was going off into the army. When I started writing my villanelle, I had no idea it would work its way in there, but it did. I guess the story is of a lady or man (in my head she was female) who had experienced some kind of loss, and seeing this sight of the woman and her soldier crying, as it is assumed he is leaving her, puts the subject in a bad state of mind (worse than already, I should say.) Some parts are weaker than others, but I do like the last stanza.
