Duck and Cover

How can any meet their gaze?
Peeking through terror's dizzying haze
Wilted clothes and statued eyes
Still air carries silent cries
Simple rabbits forced to obey
Searching for the light of day
Sheltering beneath firm wood
Crumpled ashes where hope once stood

Fear is a sea in which none can swim
Descending dark in a world so dim
Cold, hard tile of polished floor
Facing what could be no more
Fear of the present, gone is the past
School desks are mountains, but will they last?

The author's comments:
Duck and Cover was inspired by a photograph taken in the 1950s of elementary school students cowering beneath their desks during a duck and cover drill.

Your talent blows me away. You look at the world through a hidden perspective most people are afraid to see. Whatever you do keep writing. You are my favorite poet!
