highway query

I turned 14
In the backseat of my mother’s car
Looking up at the beautiful blue sky,
Ears ringing from a lovely night in the city
Stars dripping daylight above my head.
Thinking about how when I was younger,
Driving home at night,
I thought the moon was following us home,
To make sure we had a safe return.
But when I was splayed across the cold leather that night,
I kind of thought that I was the one following the moon.
Even if it meant there was no guarantee I’d make it home,
It still felt that way.
