Happiness is as a butterfly which, when pursued, is always beyond our grasp, but which if you will sit down quietly, may alight upon you.
- Nathaniel Hawthorne

When I was in kindergarten,
My luck took a turn for the worse,
You may think I am crazy,
But I thought I was cursed.

Her name was Emily,
She seemed so nice and polite,
But on that warm April day,
All did not end sunny and bright.

We were playing on the see-saw,
Two girls as happy as could be,
But then I hopped off to go swing,
And down came Emily.

With Emily crying and covered in sand,
The teacher was quick on the scene,
She quickly surmised the cause of the fall,
I tried to hide but had to come clean.

I walked away with tears in my eyes,
My face was red, and I gazed up at the sky,
I sat down and tried to make sense of it all,
No more crummy see-saws for me, said I.

The next day I walked to the monkey bars,
But I sensed trouble in the air,
Emily was watching, waiting in line,
I thought to myself, “What a nightmare.”

I stood behind her,
And waited my turn,
I saw her hand reach for the first bar,
Then her day took a u-turn.

Once again Emily fell,
To the ground far below,
I was shocked and surprised,
And my head filled with woe.

She hit the ground with a thud!
And you should have heard her scream!
Again crying loudly and covered in sand,
I said to myself, “Oh, please let this be a dream.”

But alas a dream it was not,
The teacher came running as quick as a cat,
She wagged her finger at me,
And blamed me the bullying brat.

Once the school year was over,
Emily moved to a different school,
My good luck came back to stay,
And I was once again cool.
