it's a burning or a biting
it's a hopeless kind of fighting
it's a knifing or a flaming
it's a helpless kind of blaming
it's a beating or an eating
it's an ordinary bleeding
something slicing and erasing
open wide but in a casing

This poem is about those things that hurt us, but make us human - those things that are stuck inside our hearts or bodies and can be agonizingly painful but also unavoidable.
