Apple Core
Sir Isaac Newton has seized me by the ankle
and will not
let
go!
He says that I with my woman’s creed
have plucked an apple from the Tree of Knowledge
and dropped it on his head.
He says that I have grounded humanity on this miserable ball of rock
and I have sewn the paws of the beasts to the grass
and I have clipped the wings of the birds
and now,
we’re all stuck here,
thanks to gravity and feminine tendencies.
He says, “Surely Pandora released you from that box of hers
while trying to coax me back in with those leather hands,”
and I said, “But even angels are mistaken for demons, Mr. Newton,”
and smiled.
