The Backyard Swing
a tree
one sturdy branch
so perfect and strong
from it dangles two rusty metal chains
an antique chewed-up garden hose weaves through the pattern of chain links
two holes drilled into a scrap piece of pile wood
“hold on tight”
fresh cut green grass grazes the bottoms of her shoeless feet
as a breeze gently sways her back and forth
hot yellow sun warms her face on a bright June afternoon
the only thing that fills the clear blue sky is laughter
“push me higher. higher”
dark brown hair floats in every direction
orange tank-top, faded blue shorts, white sun glasses
a girl and her favorite summer thing
in her backyard hangs a swing
