Ode to the Mile
The sight of it fills my eyes as I approach it
I will tame it, I think to myself
I cannot stay idly and sit
I need to stay warm, I say to myself
I see others master it and others that succumb
It seems so easy and so short
But I know that is the mistake of the dumb
The man calls and we line up to start
Once through, and the crisp air fills my lungs
Twice through, and the Spring fills my senses
Thrice through, and the pain fills my body
Four times through, and the freedom rushes to my soul
Each one of us sets his own pace
For our own one mile race.
