Footprints- A concrete poem

Yesterday, I

sat on a bench at the

How many

How long

Is that

I fear
edge of the beach. I saw

heartbreaks did that
did that little
family always

I’ll never
couples, children, families.

Laughing, Playing, Smiling.

does it take

They looked so happy

so blissful?

to heal?

hard work?


But I wondered if

they really were.

I took my thoughts to the edge of the shore and began

to walk. When you left, my world stopped. But as I walked,

I noticed something. The people kept swimming. The birds

kept flying. The dolphins kept jumping. Life proceeds, despite

the obstacles, despite the pain in my heart. You know,

It’s easy to recognize the bad things in life.

Your departure. My loneliness. But, it is

even easier to dismiss the beautiful

things like health, my friends, and my

family. And since you’ve been away, I

ignored all of those things—all of the

things that make the hard times worth

it. In the midst of my deep thinking, my

eyes were drawn to the imprints in the

sand. Feet—big, small, shallow and deep.

All of the people who made those prints

suffered through obstacles. It is a part of

life. So why should I let it bring me down?

From this day forward, I thank you. Not

for only the good times, but even the

bad. Thank you for leaving your

footprints on my
