Smoke Into Night
I remember how smoke touched
Your lips and criss-crossed into mine,
And escaped air's grasp
Fell just below and rose to
Gaze at motions in the sky
That were followed by shadows
And bordered the edge of the
Half-living half-dead flowerbeds,
When fingers grazed their edges
And followed below around my waist.
Shouldn't it be this difficult?
I could tell you how it felt,
And so could the stars that captured my figurine.
I could tell you when my fingers held
loose ends that I
felt so empty
and completely free.
I could tell you this is much harder
Than it is supposed to be.
