“You see I kept asking myself then: why am I so stupid that if others are stupid—and I know they are—yet I won't be wiser?”
― Fyodor Dostoyevsky, Crime and Punishment

As your fingers stroke my face,
I'm reminded of a time - though it seems so long ago.
In that time we were together,
though now no words are spoken so...

Not ones which we can hear -
they simply settle in my mind.
But now that you are near,
I remember days were kind.

Though I've grown old and weary
Though I've been bloated and effete
and though my soul has wizened to a husk
You've overcome my near defeat.

And if you'll take me as I am -
As this thing that I've become -
If you find yourself the saint I loved
You'll hear my heart, though I be dumb.

What I suffered by my own hand
Was a suffering - lack of you
A simple need, a strong desire...
I know what I must do.

I place my head against your heart,
and I look up into your eyes.
You look back, a gentle smile,
and in my soul, hope does arise.
