"You love someone, you open yourself up to suffering, that's the sad truth. Maybe they'll break your heart, maybe you'll break their heart and never be able to look at yourself in the same way. Those are the risks. The thought of losing so much control over personal happiness is unbearable. That's the burden. Like wings, they have weight, we feel that weight on our backs, but they are a burden that lifts us. Burdens which allow us to fly..."
-Dr. Jack Hodgins (Bones)

I looked up
The steps seemed to be
endless
The first step was small
It seemed easy enough
to climb
But I was scared.
People around me were
walking up
They weren't scared
They just climbed endlessly
But I couldn't.
I went to the left side
and used the railing.

I had started walking
The stairs at first weren't so bad
But then I started
having breathing problems again
I had to rest
Other people just climbed
They were like zombies
Not knowing where they
were going
Not looking at their surroundings
Just mindlessly climbing

The fifth time I had to rest,
I looked back
I had climbed so high
that I could barely see
the first step
I looked back up
The end of the steps
still weren't visible
I sat down to rest
After what felt like a minute,
I started climbing again

The climbing got more difficult
The breathing attacks were coming
more often now
I had to stop every minute
it seemed
Then I heard someone behind me
"Do you need help sir?"
The voice sounded familiar
I turned around
"Jacklynn?" I asked in amazement
"Dimitri?" She said just as shocked
"What are you doing here?"
I asked her
"I don't know.
The last thing I remember doing
was driving. Why are you here?"
"I don't know either.
What I do know Jacklynn,
is that my asthma is attacking
up again."

Jacklynn grabbed my hand
She always did that
to try and make me less scared
We started walking together
up the stairs
It felt good that someone
noticed me
I liked knowing I wasn't alone

When we got closer
to the top of the stairs,
I started to hear some noise
"Do you hear that?"
Jacklynn nodded her head.
"What do you think it is?"
"Maybe a party."
"I like parties.
Do you think I can have
a party tomorrow?"
"Why do you want
a party tomorrow?"
"Tomorrow's my
twelfth birthday."
"Then yes,
I think that you can
have a party
when we get there."

We got very close to the top
There was a white light
It got brighter and brighter
I shielded my eyes
As I was climbing the final steps,
the light was blinding
I closed my eyes

When I opened them
The room was lit normally
There was a lady in front
of me and Jacklynn
“Names?” she asked
“Jacklynn Prim.”
“Dimitri Showmn.”
She looked at her list
Muttering our names
“Here you are!
You can go inside.”
We walked inside

I looked around
at the people inside
They were all wearing white
The building we were in
was pure white,
but it didn’t hurt my eyes
One couple got my attention
I saw that they had wings
I let go of Jacklynn’s hand
and ran towards them

“Excuse me miss,”
I asked the lady
“Your wings are very pretty.”
“Thank you,
would you like to feel
how soft they are?”
“Yes I would.”
I then reached up
and touched the softest thing
in the world
“How do you get them so soft?”
“Dimitri!
Sorry about him,
he’s only eleven.”
“It’s no problem,
he was just admiring
my wings.”
“They are gorgeous.”
“Thank you.”

“Hey lady,”
I asked politely
“Do you think I’ll
grow wings?”
“Of course you will sweetie.
This is heaven.
Everyone grows wings.”
The word heaven
rang in my ears.

“H-h-heaven?”
I stuttered
“Oh, sorry.
I guess you didn’t know.
But yes,
this is heaven.
I’m sorry you found
out like this.”
“I-I-I’m dead?”
“I’m afraid so darling.”
I looked up at
Jacklynn for comfort
She tried to fake
a smile,
but I saw her pain
We were both dead.
