Were You There?

Walking by myself, in the snow
Everyone shuffles by
Rosy cheeks bitten by cold
Evening falls, and I still stand alone

Yes, I say, when you ask if I’m alright
Only the answer I gave is a lie
Usually, this is how things go

Taking a minute to reflect, I
Hear you say “OK”
Every single day this happens!
Running to you and hoping you’ll see
Everything’s not alright

The author's comments:
This piece was inspired by the movie "Speak," which is an amazing and truly moving picture, for those of you who haven't seen it. It follows the story of an ostricized teenage girl suffering mental trauma but doesn't have the courage to talk to anyone about it. I think everyone can relate to it in some way; it triggered memories of my antisocial middle school days, and I still can't watch it withough crying. I reccomend it to everyone.
